It's nice to know that in the post-Brexit dystopia that Viz comic 284 envisages, jobbing musicians will still be catered for (though admittedly they are quite tough candidate requirements)
Satirical recruitment advert for 'Global Pillage Food Haulers', seeking 'Professional Flamethrower Electric Guitar Player qualified to Grade 3 or above.'
"When our army of shirtless misfit steampunks go on a battle raid to acquire new stocks of tinned food, they need someone to whip them up into a proper fighting frenzy so that their lives no longer matter to them.
Could YOU be that person?
An exciting vacancy has arisen for an experienced musician qualified to Grade 3 or above in Flamethrower Electric Guitar to play thunderous heavy metal chords and riffs while dangling off a crane on the front of a fast-moving rusty vehicle with lots of exhaust pipes. The successful candidate will have a Mohican haircut, no ears, chains attaching his nose to his nipples, and his head and neck painted bright red.
Generous package - £25k minimum, company vehicle (pick-up truck chassis with lorry engine and human skulls on front) and small share of spoils following a successful raid. Plus negotiable bonus to reflect substantial risk of being smashed into another vehicle or dropped and ran over by the giant wheels of your own truck.
Send CV and the names of 3 referees to: Ratfucker Castrolux, Head of Recruitment, Global Pillage plc, 35 Devastation Street, Necropolis Sector 4 (formerly Swindon).
Global Pillage plc - Keeping a Tight Grip on the UK's Dwindling Food Stocks"

Beverley Minster holds what is believed to be the largest collection of medieval musical carvings in the world, featuring more than 70 distinct stone and wood musicians playing roughly 20 different types of instruments. I love the expression on this one.

Interested in the history of #OldEnglish scholarship? @emgallimore.bsky.social, Thijs Porck and I will be editing a volume on OE in the long 19th century; if you'd like to contribute a chapter, the deadline for abstracts is 1 Sept 2026, first full drafts due Sept 2027. Spread the word! #medievalsky
Call for Contributions
Dynamics of Old English Scholarship in the Long Nineteenth Century: Discoveries, Disputes and the Development of a Discipline
ed. Rachel A. Fletcher, Ellen Gallimore & Thijs Porck
The long nineteenth century (1786–1914) was a dynamic and transformative period for the scholarly study of Old English.
The legacies of nineteenth-century scholarship remain deeply embedded in the study of Old English today. As a result, contemporary scholars must engage not only with early medieval language and literature itself, but also with the intellectual and ideological lenses through which nineteenth-century scholars recovered, edited and interpreted this material.
We hope to bring together a peer-reviewed edited volume with papers on various aspects of the scholarly study of Old English in the long nineteenth century, with an additional focus on European continental
contributions in line with the ERC-project EMERGENCE (‘Early Medieval English in NineteenthCentury Europe’). Proposals for chapter contributions of c. 8000 words are welcome from scholars from all academic backgrounds. First drafts full drafts are due at the end of September 2027.
Possible topics/themes include but are not limited to:
- Discoveries of Old English texts
- Disputes about linguistic or literary interpretations of Old English
- Developments in the discipline of Old English studies
- Personal, religious, political and ideological motivations for the study of Old English
- Biographical contributions about scholars of Old English
- Scholarly correspondence on Old English matters
- Editing and printing of Old English texts
- Teaching of Old English
Please send an abstract (500 words) and short bio (150 words) to Rachel A. Fletcher
(r.a.fletcher@hum.leidenuniv.nl), Ellen Gallimore (ellen.gallimore@york.ac.uk) and Thijs Porck (m.h.porck@hum.leidenuniv.nl) before 1 September 2026.

I once amused my librarian partner by imagining the rules of a library run by the Fae. This extract from An Unofficial Guide to Obronstowe was my foray into faerie rules. There was also a sequel with a mobile library that went completely Baba Yaga. #HorrorWritersChat
1 - Count the shelves

Though the library itself may be small, it has been said by some that it seems to go on forever. Some also say that languages on the signs and spines of the books begin to shift and become unrecognisable. If this be the case, count the shelves. Do not go beyond four-and-twenty, for at that point you risk there being no way back.

2 - Do not neglect to pay fines

A contract made is not to be broken.

3 - Use correct currency for fines

Those manning the Obronstowe library favour hard cash. They are suspicious of ephemeral nature of online or notional transactions, liable to vanish under external circumstances.

4 - Silence is not encouraged.

Obronstowe Library is a community space, and the entities manning it are happy for light, non-disruptive conversation. If it is too quiet, they will even engage patrons in conversation. Do not be alarmed if this happens. It is preferable to the alternative – that the quiet voices coming from nowhere in particular can no longer be ignored.

5 - It is normal to get lost in a book.

For some, this can be for longer than others. Do not plan to spend too much time in Obronstowe Library if you have any pressing engagements for up to a week.

6 - Keep close watch on your children

This is an especially important safeguarding issue in Obronstowe. Should your children wander out of sight too long, you may not get the same child back – no matter what initial appearances suggest.

7 - Do not question the rules.

This should go without saying, but bear in mind that Obronstowe has staff who answer to powers that lie beyond the County Council, and are inclined to invoke them when needed.

I'm feeling angry about generative AI again, so I'm posting this image from last autumn, when I was researching a thirteenth-century Danish fragment in Odense. The materiality of such fragments is a good antidote to the vapid bullshit of genAI. [Odense katedralskolebibliotek 25285]
