Dynamics of Old English Scholarship in the Long Nineteenth Century: Discoveries, Disputes and the Development of a Discipline
ed. Rachel A. Fletcher, Ellen Gallimore & Thijs Porck
The long nineteenth century (1786–1914) was a dynamic and transformative period for the scholarly study of Old English.
The legacies of nineteenth-century scholarship remain deeply embedded in the study of Old English today. As a result, contemporary scholars must engage not only with early medieval language and literature itself, but also with the intellectual and ideological lenses through which nineteenth-century scholars recovered, edited and interpreted this material.
We hope to bring together a peer-reviewed edited volume with papers on various aspects of the scholarly study of Old English in the long nineteenth century, with an additional focus on European continental
contributions in line with the ERC-project EMERGENCE (‘Early Medieval English in NineteenthCentury Europe’). Proposals for chapter contributions of c. 8000 words are welcome from scholars from all academic backgrounds. First drafts full drafts are due at the end of September 2027.
Possible topics/themes include but are not limited to:
- Discoveries of Old English texts
- Disputes about linguistic or literary interpretations of Old English
- Developments in the discipline of Old English studies
- Personal, religious, political and ideological motivations for the study of Old English
- Biographical contributions about scholars of Old English
- Scholarly correspondence on Old English matters
- Editing and printing of Old English texts
- Teaching of Old English
Please send an abstract (500 words) and short bio (150 words) to Rachel A. Fletcher
(r.a.fletcher@hum.leidenuniv.nl), Ellen Gallimore (ellen.gallimore@york.ac.uk) and Thijs Porck (m.h.porck@hum.leidenuniv.nl) before 1 September 2026.

International Medieval Congress at the University of Leeds, 5-8 July 2027

Pictish Pasts: New Approaches to Pictish Studies

The past few decades have seen a renewed interest in the Picts, both in academic contexts and in popular media. This has precipitated re-evaluations of their symbols, a reframing of their geopolitical structures, and new insights into regnal succession practices. Such work, however, does not usually feature in broader medieval discussions, which often gloss over Scotland. As such, this session aims to firmly situate developments in Pictish studies in wider medieval discourse, focusing attention on Scotland and its contexts.
We invite proposals for 15-20 minute papers on any aspect of Pictish studies. We particularly welcome proposals which speak to this year's theme of 'communities'.

Topics may include:

* Pictish symbols and symbol stones
* The place of the Picts in Scottish nationhood
* Pictish hagiography
* Pictish monastic and scribal communities
* Perspectives on the Picts outwith Pictland
* The 'destruction' of the Picts
* The historiography of Pictish studies
* Using archaeology to understand Pictish history
* Later medieval perspectives on the Picts
* The Cruithin of Ireland

Please send an abstract of no more than 250 words, alongside a short bio, to Fergus Holmes-Stanley (fergus.holmes-stanley@glasgow.ac.uk) by the 31st August 2026.

Wundor in Old English Literature

62nd International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo
13th-15th May 2017

A sense of wonder runs through the Old English literary corpus, from the marvellous sights described in ‘Alexander’s Letter to Aristotle’ to the ambiguous ‘wundorlicu wiht’ of the Exeter Book riddles. But what does it mean to be wondrous? This session will explore the multivalence of the Old English term ‘wundor’, which holds the simultaneous meanings of marvel, portent and miracle. Its papers will discuss wonder in Old English literature from a range of perspectives, bringing together literary-historical analysis of phenomena, art-historical readings of marvellous illustrations and studies of how texts depict affective responses to the inexplicable.

To apply, please submit an abstract of up to 300 words to the ICMS Confex site by 15th September 2026.

CALL FOR PAPERS! Alastair Forbes (@areforbes.bsky.social) and I are seeking papers for our proposed Leeds #IMC2027 session: 'Ordered and Disordered Communities in Clerical Thought' All disciplines and career stages welcome - abstracts due 14 September. @imc-leeds.bsky.social #MedievalSky
A call for papers for Leeds International Medieval Congress 2027 on the topic of 'Ordered and Disordered Communities in Clerical Thought'. This panel examines how medieval clerical and monastic cultures defined communities and situated them within social or religious order. We seek to explore how these cultures understood disorder within or between communities, as well as how their judgements shaped ideas about communal identity and belonging. Communities considered might range from individual institutions to wider social order and communities, across the entirety of Christendom in the Middle Ages.

We welcome proposals from colleagues in any discipline of medieval studies and at any career stage, including postgraduate and early career researchers. Although papers should engage substantively with clerical or monastic understandings of order, they need not be confined to clerical communities or clerically authored sources. Please submit abstracts of up to 300 words for a 20-minute paper, along with a short biography, to Dr Alastair Forbes and Dr Grant Jones at: a.r.e.forbes@durham.ac.uk and grant.jones@durham.ac.uk no later than Monday 14 September 2026.

I'm organising (with Hunter Phillips) 2 sessions at @kzooicms.bsky.social on RETHINKING ECOTHEORY! (Sponsored by Medieval Ecocriticisms) Please apply (by 11/15) for either DISENTANGLING ECOCRITICISMS (tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S1) or DISAPPOINTING ECOCRITICISMS (tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S2).
CALL FOR PAPERS: ICMS (KALAMAZOO) 2027
RETHINKING ECOTHEORY
This pair of sessions (sponsored by Medieval Ecocriticisms) questions ‘entanglement’ as the predominant idiom of ecocritical thinking, arguing that the medieval past both yields and necessitates alternative ways of thinking about our ecological investments, both affective and ontological. Drawing upon recent critiques (e.g. Swarbick and Tremblay 2024), this pair of sessions interrogates the limits of ‘enmeshment’ as the predominant idiom for ecocritical approaches to the premodern past. Although the (specifically European) premodern past is often identified as ‘The Green Middle Ages’ (e.g. Chavannes-Mazel 2023, Kehnel 2024), these sessions question the recuperation of this period as one of ethical, reciprocal, and harmonious relations between humans and the natural world.
Session 1: DISENTANGLING ECOCRTICISMS
How can ecocritical discourse benefit from attuning to bodies and environments in the Middle Ages for whom entanglement is either a problem or an impossibility? We welcome papers that “rethink nature as a limit” (Swarbrick & Tremblay, 2024), considering how the natural world or “Nature” in the Middle Ages makes demands on precarious bodies in a precarious world where uncomfortable boundaries trouble or refuse entangled thinking. APPLY: tinyurl.com/ICMS2027-S1
Session 2: DISAPPOINTING ECOCRITICISMS
We invite papers which grapple with the disappointing, dissatisfying, and disconcerting relationalities embedded within medieval ecological imaginaries or practices, or the ways in which the premodern past eludes our desire for eco-motional rescue. We welcome papers from any area of medieval studies that explore the bad feelings that attend medieval relations with the environment, and problematize contemporary theorisations of a harmonious, reciprocal mesh. I had a wonderful time being part of the @imc-leeds.bsky.social team this year at #IMC2026. It was so rewarding to be able to help make IMC a special experience for the delegates, exhibitors, and performers. Now I get to watch the recordings of sessions I wanted to see but couldn't attend in person!

Heartily seconded, and not just because he's my boss. It's literal laugh-out-loud stuff; Henry Sweet did *not* know when to keep his mouth shut.

Our sessions have moved! Due to a technical issue with our original room, you can now find us in the Esther Simpson Building room 2.08 tomorrow starting bright and early at 9am. Hope to see you there at @imc-leeds.bsky.social! #IMC2026

Always a highlight for @imc-leeds.bsky.social for me. Absolutely love it when there's 19th-century books! Picked up Felix Liebermann's Laws of Edward the Confessor and Henry Sweet's Student's Dictionary of Anglo-Saxon (which I probably already have at home but it never hurts to have an extra).
