One of my favorite and most effective design patterns is "tell the player exactly what you're gonna do to them, then do it." You can be SIGNIFICANTLY meaner to the player if you simply tell them ahead of time that that's exactly what you'll be doing, and also the suspense of the warning is a delight

One of my groups is playing through A Saga of the Fragile Peace, for the Household TTRPG. I really appreciate that they know *exactly* how much adventure you need for a session. I've always said you need about 1/3 as much plot as you think, and this is a great example.

It's good for one specific thing: going into a maze and killing monsters - and as @exstasisgames.bsky.social has pointed out, it's amazing how many stories are just mazes with monsters in. Which means D&D can encompass much more than you expect- but also makes its very real limitations hard to see.
