as John Rogers often says, a fine is just the price of doing business, a meaningless gesture that changes nothing. Not to mention the reverse course workers' rights and workplace safety have been on over the last decade (accelerated recently). Anyway, support your local workers' right organizations.

LRTs: Radium Girls is equal parts horrifying, outrage inducing, and heartbreaking. Part of the outrage comes from the young women's treatment, but part of it (I read it in 2020 or 2021) is because nothing has changed. There may be laws about workplace safety, but they're enforced with fines. And

The Cornell story is horrific, but I’d like to shine a light on what happened at LSU with a current football player on the team:

In July, the school found Shanklin responsible for "forcible rape" and issued a one-year suspension, which is a full ban from campus and activities, according to documents reviewed by ESPN. After Shanklin appealed, an administrative law judge who handles appeals per LSU policy upheld the finding that the athlete was responsible for "forcible rape," but reduced the punishment to four semesters of probation with no restrictions, which allows Shanklin to remain enrolled and on campus and to participate in activities as long as he stays out of trouble.

But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies.
