And yeah, sometimes Jewish communal establishment organizations say "oh well if you really cared you'd stop criticizing Israel," they are wrong and you can tell them to fuck off. Doesn't lift the responsibility to actually protect Jews. People deserve safety even if their leaders are racist morons.

Fundamentally Jews being safe in NYC has *nothing inherently to do* with Palestine. Israel's genocide of Palestinians is a contributing factor to the rise in antisemitism, but that could end and there would still be antisemitic violence and harassment. Gotta disentangle them.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I hope Katelyn is right. I’m not optimistic short term, though if humanity survives I’m convinced we will ultimately thrive as the bigots are forgotten. One part that hits hard, though: the feeling when the leaders of your country describe you as evil, day in, day out. It’s devastating.

The GOP is an opposition party even when it's in power, the idea that they are the perpetual underdog is central to their internal mythology and can't be disturbed by facts or the results of elections. It's also why they're bad at, you know, governing.

If your first instinct is to say “not all men!” you need to ask yourself why you are responding to an argument no one is making. People tend to do that when reacting emotionally to something that hurts their feelings.

Not all men. Jesus Christ, don't you think women *know* that? Use your heads instead of getting defensive. Most of you would be terrified of swimming among sharks, even though sharks are stastically far less dangerous to you than men are to women.

For creating popular songs about real women, for turning feminine style intc humor and power. and for bringing jobs and under- standing to the mountain people of Tennessee By Gloria Steinem
eople who haven't listened to Dolly Parton or to feminism may be surprised to learn that they go together. In fact, she has crossed musical class lines to bring work, real life, and strong women into a world of pop music usually domi- nated by unreal romance. She has used her business sense to bring other women and poor people along with her. And her flamboyant style has turned all the de- valued svmbols of womanliness to her own ends.
