this country will not be transformed without addressing policing, prisons, surveillance and militarism. Sorry. Cannot get around it. The carceral socialists may make incremental progress but they will ALWAYS come up against state violence.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

The court is basically saying that knowledge of the victim being trans is potentially exculpatory for a self defense legal claim. This is explicitly greenlighting the panic defense and saying a victims trans status might excuse a murder.

Shouldn't the Democrats have something like an Elon Donations Tracker posted on all of their websites and social media? Make this SALIENT? Might it make sense to point out repeatedly that he is a white supremacist and ask the public why he would be backing the GOP?

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters. The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

Public "assets" = our current collective capacities to meed public needs. Public "liabilities" = what the public owes to private interests. Public "equity" = the net value of public's current collective capacity less its obligations to private interests.

I think the rationalist community pretty regularly forgets that the goal of development is not "reaching the stars", it is "human flourishing". A thing that helps you reach the stars at the expense of that is bad and should be discontinued

Reconstruction brings in an imagination of creating new institutions, which has been conspicuously absent from American politics including Bernie-style leftism for a very very long time

I'm under no illusions about how things are or what the trajectory is. But I'm also excited for the future because that is where I will hang out with the people I care about and do the things I like doing, or haven't done before. Weird but telling that this holds less appeal for much richer people.

I had not seen this clip where Tammy Duckworth advises Democrats to "not impeach anybody," "get back to work" and "allow" Donald Trump to "save face" and I would just like to remind the senator from IL that the federal government took 4,000 Chicagoans and murdered a 38-year-old father last fall.

From my personal experience people don't want to pay you to tell them they can't do anything about, eg, the very likely anti-Dem. midterm backlash in 2030 (or, gulp, 34). But it's true. So consultants make up stuff like "Kamala Harris would have won if she ran anti-trans ads"

So when libs say, you need to do incremental progress like gay marriage, it completely ignores the rollbacks that have happened in 5 years. It is every aspect of trans life from where we use the bathroom, how we are addressed, what our IDs say, to even censorship on discussions about our existence.

There's no evidence that we can neutralize MAHA with a better health care system. Western Europe has universal access and lower costs — and still has huge anti-vaxx and “medical freedom” movements. MAHA is driven by right-wing misinformation, not legitimate grievances with US healthcare.

Not only is redesigning our public finance systems possible through political struggle; it may very well prove to be more advantageous a terrain than substantially raising taxes on the rich, for the latter still leave the design element of treating the rich as the source of financial wealth intact.

I don’t think there is broad enough support for a governance agenda that is just anti-democratic backsliding or for state capacity. But together there might be. And substantively, a synthesis between these perspectives would be healthy.
The democratic backsliding group would benefit from objections raised by those who worry that constraints become proceduralism, that stopping bad action can easily morph into stopping any action. These are reasonable concerns.
Why do the state capacity types need to take democratic backsliding concerns seriously? The Trump administration's executive aggrandizement has revealed and exploited existing weaknesses in our systems. It is not enough to assume there will not be another Trump. There is a queue of would-be Trumps waiting in line. And without governing stability, the rule of law, and constraints on corruption or abuses of power, no good government vision has a meaningful opportunity to sustain itself.

The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking. An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times. The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.

There's a broad, cultural-heritage sense in which all Western socialists are also Marxists. But one reason I don't ID myself as one is that I find M's "base vs. superstructure" distinction very problematic, esp. with respect to race. @greenbackbetter.bsky.social's 🧵 demonstrates that problem well.

So the alternative to neoliberal “representation” isn’t less recognition or a retreat to supposedly non-cultural class politics. It is public institutions—the fisc—turning recognition into public obligations that orient inter-temporal planning and provision rather than just present-tense rationing.

It was always obvious that “cancel culture” was a fake threat ginned up by reactionaries to inflate the authoritarian threat of the left. The best evidence for this? The spree of cancellations they have embarked on since taking power. It’s the bulk of what they’ve done!

The idea that deep institutional damage can be easily rolled back seems like a very odd take for a conservative. The damage to the civil service system is huge, and legislation is needed to reassure future hires they won’t be fired on a whim.

The core argument is that cities like Seattle are so addled by left-wing ideology that they have fallen into dystopia. In reality, the city has never adequately funded harm reduction programs and continues to rely on incarceration to address homelessness. What Powell wants is what we're doing.
