I’m not going to defend the dumbest online cancellations of 2016-2024. Even if you think they were injustices, though, we are talking about maybe 100 people, mostly public figures, losing their jobs. That’s around a quarter of the number of firings after Charlie Kirk was killed.

It was always obvious that “cancel culture” was a fake threat ginned up by reactionaries to inflate the authoritarian threat of the left. The best evidence for this? The spree of cancellations they have embarked on since taking power. It’s the bulk of what they’ve done!

Every article about “the excesses of cancel culture” in 2020-2022 pulled from the same group of maybe 10 people, and even there there were always at least 2 people in each article who clearly deserved to be at least disciplined, and probably fired.

It's a classic case of the reactionaries pondering what needs to be true in order to justify the things they crave doing, and then pretending those things are in fact happening.

For many decades, it was simply wealthy white Christian males (and those who did their bidding) "reminding uppity folks of their proper place". It only gained the name "cancel culture" when it started happening to certain high-profile wealthy white Christian males.
