#WeekendReading: Côté et al. on how some marine climate change experiments might actually simulate extreme heatwaves much more than they do climate change. 🧪🌊 Link: royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/art…
Conceptual depiction of the potential role of ramping rate on the responses of organisms to climate change experiments. The baseline response represents the level of response under controlled (ambient) experimental conditions (e.g. temperature). We hypothesize, following [22], that sudden exposure (i.e. no ramping period; black curve) to novel experimental conditions will elicit a strong response, while increasingly long ramping periods (= horizontal bars below the baseline and curves in shades of green) will alter the shape of the response curve. The red arrow indicates the start of the experimental period; the red dots suggest times when responses might be recorded. The response axis could reflect increasingly positive or increasingly negative responses. The shapes of the response curves are hypothetical but serve to demonstrate that the response to the novel experimental condition might change depending on ramping rate.

So what is a cloaca, you ask? It’s an all-purpose rear orifice (“vent”) that is the only opening for digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts in tons of vertebrates (including amphibians, birds, reptiles, and, you guessed it, cartilaginous fishes).
