It's grunt sculpin Saturday! 🌟💕 Fun fact: Grunt sculpins use giant barnacle shells as camouflage! The shape of a grunt sculpin's large head bears a striking resemblance to the former resident of the shell, allowing these cunning fish to hide away from potential predators. 🫥

🗡 Our country's fishes and how to know them London: Simpkin, Hamilton, Kent & Co., [1902] [Source]
Illustration from 1902 titled "Our country's fishes and how to know them," showing seven different fish species arranged vertically and horizontally. Central is a swordfish with a long, pointed bill, streamlined body, and forked tail. Surrounding it are various other fish, including eel-like fish with long, slender bodies and pronounced teeth, and several shorter, round-bodied fish with detailed scales and fins. Each fish is labeled with a number (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23) for identification. The artwork is detailed, using shades of brown, red, and gray to highlight fins, scales, and anatomical features.

For the last #SciArtSeptember #SundayFishSketch, Day 27 Quill I did a lionfish which was an ambitious choice when I’m getting over a bug I picked up at the conference 😅
Colored pencil drawing of a lionfish. It seems proportionally to be more fin than fish and has a huge spiny 1st dorsal fin banded with brown-red. The other find are more spotted/lightly banded with brown. The body is a series of brown/red-brown/yellowish stripes. There is a little horn looking thing with a flag bit on the eye.
