This is a photo of our home planet taken only a few hours ago! So what? We have photos of Earth taken from space every day. Ah, but *this* photo was taken by a spacecraft ON ITS WAY TO JUPITER.
From the source: "Mostly black space, most of Earth visible at the top right of the image. Part of a spacecraft visible on the left."

I really love that the supposed CG renderings of the city in Escape From New York aren't computer generated. They made a miniature model of the city, painted the buildings black, and put reflective tape around the edges.

Got to share some of my favourite poetry as examples with my poor unsuspecting students today. 'My dreams, my works, must wait till after hell' by Gwendolyn Brooks has stayed with me since the first time I read it and it remains heart-breakingly beautiful.
my dreams, my works, must wait till after hell

By Gwendolyn Brooks
I hold my honey and I store my bread
In little jars and cabinets of my will.
I label clearly, and each latch and lid
I bid, Be firm till I return from hell.
I am very hungry. I am incomplete.
And none can tell when I may dine again.
No man can give me any word but Wait,
The puny light. I keep eyes pointed in;
Hoping that, when the devil days of my hurt
Drag out to their last dregs and I resume
On such legs as are left me, in such heart
As I can manage, remember to go home,
My taste will not have turned insensitive
To honey and bread old purity could love.

We can not assume someone else is going to do this advocacy for us. It is on US. The kids of Philadelphia deserve a natural history museum. We can’t let the wealthy people say “it’s too big an investment to keep this 200 year old institution running” win. It’s unacceptable. Our kids deserve better.
