Just got out of THE WEIGHT and really enjoyed it on the big screen. Can’t say I bought Bavaria as a stand-in for Oregon, but Ethan Hawke is tremendous as always, and it’s one of the best cinematic takes on the Depression since ROAD TO PERDITION.

Just to show how integrated the 🇺🇸/🇨🇦 economies are, the original maker of Canadian Club (Hiram Walker) was an American who moved his distillery across the river from Detroit to get away from the Temperance movement. Capone & the Purple Gang later “imported” a lot of his product during Prohibition.

Sometimes “research” means going through boxes in an archive, or newspaper articles online. Sometimes it means taking to the skies in a WWII bomber (one of only two Avro Lancasters still airworthy) to try and imagine Edward R. Murrow’s experience flying in a raid over Berlin. 🗃️

Rooney “was popular and beloved because he was trusted. And he was trusted because he took core journalistic principles and used them the way they’re supposed to be used: by sticking up for the little guy.” One could say much the same thing about Edward R. Murrow (and all the true greats).
