We don’t hate insurance companies or the systems of medical care that cooperate with these wealth extraction models enough. Telling people they will be financially penalized for so much as uttering an inappropriate question is hugely consequential.
A letter from a medical clinic reading:

“ANNUAL VISIT: BEFORE WE GET STARTED TODAY
Your annual wellness exam is designed to focus on preventive care. If you bring up a medical concern(s) during today's appointment, you will likely receive an additional charge.
Examples include:
• Pelvic pain
• Irregular/heavy bleeding or Painful periods
• Menopause symptoms
• Depression or anxiety concerns
• Vaginal discharge or infection symptoms and Urinary symptoms
• New breast concerns
• Medication changes or new prescriptions
• Evaluation of any new or ongoing medical problem
• Procedures
You Have Options
If you have medical concerns today, your provider may:
• Address them during today's visit (which will likely result in an additional office visit charge), OR
Schedule a separate appointment if more time or evaluation is needed.
Please Note
Even a brief discussion of a medical problem may require:
• Medical decision making
• Additional documentation
• Orders for testing or imaging
• Medication management
These services are billed differently than preventive care and are determined by your insurance plan. Our goal is to provide you with the care you need while being transparent about possible charges.”

Breaking news: The lining of the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool peeled in at least seven places along seams that were created when the material was applied, indicating likely problems in how it was installed, according to experts and a Post analysis.

Reflecting Pool peeling likely caused by application flaws, experts say
President Donald Trump has blamed vandals, but a Washington Post analysis finds that the peeling tracks closely with stages of the renovation process.

Both totally unnecessary and extremely funny that the Guardian has an interactive graphic for you to change the color of the US flag's blue to the color of the Reflecting Pool from 8 to 19 June and counting
Screenshot of the article's graphic, showing color swatches derived from the Earthcam archive, illustration the color of the reflecting pool calibrated against satellite imagery, from 8 June to 19 June 2026. I chose yesterday, 19 June, so it rendered the US American flag with a green hue instead of blue.

I caught Emmy with the tiniest blep this evening.
A black cat with yellow eyes is in a gray cat bed with some towels looking over her left shoulder at the camera. Her little pink tongue is visible just a tiny bit. This is known on the cat section of the interwebs as a “blep.”

There is also an interesting conversation to be had about “theory of mind” and overlaps between psychopathy and neurodivergence/autism, without implying that ND folks are all sociopaths!

As someone with a Ph.D. who studied psychopathy and also has read it in French and English (though long before the grad degree), I agree. Doesn’t read as sociopath to me. Could be read as neurodivergence, could be read as commentary on absurdity of human actions.

The thing about Camus' The Stranger is I can't help reading Meursault as neurodivergent rather than sociopathic as some have found him. When he reluctantly justifies the murder, he tries to explain that he was overwhelmed by the Sun. The sensory overload was described in minute detail. Microessay?

⚡ KFF’s Latoya Hill explains how new data showing declines in use of early prenatal care, particularly among people of color, points to widening disparities in maternal and infant health. #QuickTake on.kff.org/3MVuOn3
KFF graphic featuring a quote from Latoya Hill, senior policy manager with KFF’s Racial Equity and Health Policy Program. It says, “While the exact reasons for the recent declines in early prenatal care use are not known, disparities in maternal and infant health reflect underlying inequities in insurance coverage, access to care, and social and economic factors. Overall, Hispanic, Black, AIAN, and NHPI people are more likely to be uninsured compared to White people, and these gaps will likely widen due to expected losses in Medicaid and ACA Marketplace coverage under the 2025 reconciliation law.”
