Summary below with results from 3-year study in Kenya assessing whether savings interventions can strengthen economic prospects for the future and also reduce engagement in behaviors that increase HIV/STI risk. Our results are extremely promising!

No idea yet if this is pneumonic plague or something else. But one thing we do know: Infectious diseases do best in times of war and disrupted infrastructure. It's not good for the Russian people (or anyone, diseases spread) that Russia is busy waging war instead of devoting attention to this.

Sincerely: this is a great $20 opportunity for critics to get a better handle on the current state of consumer-facing AI capabilities. Best case it proves useful, but at a minimum could help hone arguments about the real limitations.

We are about to see an avalanche of AI generated animations. I think all those low-quality children's animations can already be replaced, which suggests they will be soon. Opus 5.5 is incredibly powerful and cheap. The weirdening is accelerating. Like, this isn't even obviously AI.

For those interested in medical history, I really recommend, if you have not read it yet, that you read Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green. It's written like a story, it's gripping, and it will teach you a lot about tuberculosis. It's definitely going to affect how I teach public health law.

This outcome was so tragically predictable that I’d already baked increased mortality scenarios into modeling gonorrhea vaccine candidate circa 2023
Nor has any published research addressed the connection between recent ectopic pregnancy death rates and untreated infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia, which increased substantially during the first years of the pandemic before declining again. Those infections can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which causes fallopian tube scarring and raises the long-term risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy.

Additional context: Lancaster County doesn’t have a public health department. Moreover, most Amish and Mennonite children are uninsured. The cost for vaccines, appointments, and related travel for 13 kids would add up quickly — and would be worse under the proposed schedule changes.

Our Medicaid tracker is updated and # of kids enrolled since Jan 2025 in ths US is now ⬇️ 2.45 million. That's a lot. Why is this important? When Medicaid child enrollment declines, the # of uninsured kids typically goes up.

I have quantified measles deaths globally on behalf of the WHO since 2012. We attribute any death within 4 weeks of a measles case to measles. Measles is immunosuppressive and the proximate cause is often a secondary infection that would otherwise not have led to death.
