I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:
theclimatebrink.com
What if the world hadn't built wind and solar?
Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

We will need both carrot (incentives for clean energy) and stick (disincentives for fossil fuels) to follow the needed decarbonization pathway. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something — probably (directly or indirectly) fossil fuels.

There have been three firearm discharges in Greater Manchester (pop. 3 million) since 1 April 2026. Not three injuries, not three killings, but three shots fired in six months. I wonder how that compares to any US city.
Firearms discharges fall
In 2008, there were 146 shootings in Greater Manchester. This number had more than halved by 2020.
Since then, firearms discharges across the region have continued to fall -albeit not consistently - and GMP data shows there has been a significant drop-off in gun violence rates betweens 2020 and 2026.
Number of firearms discharges:
2020 to 2021: 71
2021 to 2022: 46
2022 to 2023: 26
2023 to 2024: 28
2024 to 2025: 29
2025 to 2026: 16
