My son decided to rush as a first year this fall explicitly to get the future business connections. We had a good conversation about keeping an eye out for actual abuse while pledging as opposed to genuinely silly/stupid stuff. He knows that nothing is worth being abused or abusing others.

My wife and I watch baseball with the sound off - she has sensory issues and the crowd+disembodied announcer voices makes her ill. It's fun as hell to watch this way, and we catch probably 80% of the Yankees regular season. We unmute after big moments so that we can hear the crowd.

It honestly sounds like far too much work. I am not going to put in the effort to 1) learn a bunch of computer programming, 2) re-organize my entire life into tasks an AI could help with, and 3) build specialized AI agents to do those tasks. My life has no room for these things. I don’t want them.

I wonder if some of this is ABS - catchers successfully challenged ball calls 58% of the time AND made more challenges than batters. Batters challenged about 1k fewer times AND were only successful 48% of the time.

There's a eugenics post that went up today that is best summed up by "lots of things I object to are actually eugenics" Some of the items on the list are arguably eugenics, but many of them are not. The list is almost entirely bad things; it's the dilution of the term that I object to.

Sure, go ahead, post about a relatively important distinction that matters, I say to myself. People can handle it without being too weird, I reassure myself.

Me: think we need to differentiate between "Al uses a lot of water!" (not necessarily bad on its own) and "Al stresses local water supplies" (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even "modest" use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers

The general culture is much more diverse than it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. That means that pop culture is much more fragmented - I think that's a good thing. Being the #1 song is probably a LOT less meaningful as a result.

I like the theory that Succot was originally the Big Holiday that everyone celebrated. Rosh Hashanah was just the day to announce that it was coming up, and Yom Kippur was a day, mostly for the Priests, to get spiritually ready for serving the people on Succot.

So I got a wild hair up my ass last week and ordered supplies to make a sukkah. While I've yet to gather greenery from the forest I live in to cover it with, I guess it's not the worst first attempt to start with. (also lol building this during the forecasted "wettest week of the year" for my area)

I've spent a lot of years studying a lot of collapses, and the truth of the matter is that they're always mundane: mild climatic shifts that reduce crop yields, a dumbass in power who makes some terrible decisions, neglecting things that obviously matter but the will to fix them can't be summoned.
