The central issue is fundamental. The treatment was described as randomized at the village level. It was not. Participants instead retained their treatment assignments from two earlier studies run by the same NGO. Those earlier treatments themselves had large/persistent effects.

The @oneacrefund.bsky.social bundled farm program that provides credit + training + insurance to smallholders, boosted maize yields & profits in Kenya. Our new @voxdev.bsky.social piece discusses why tackling multiple constraints together can unlock big gains If bundling works, how can we scale it?
Implications for agricultural policy
The agricultural productivity gap in sub-Saharan Africa is real—but it is not immutable. Our findings show that smallholder farmers can produce and earn more when they receive the right mix of support. Bundled programmes offer one way to deliver that support. They address multiple barriers together and produce large gains. But success depends on careful design and effective delivery. Policymakers should invest in understanding what makes bundled programmes work and explore how to scale them up without sacrificing quality.

In terminating hundreds of NIH grants, the Trump administration dumped years of investment down the drain. In my latest @opinion.bloomberg.com column, we analyzed the cancelled projects & talked to scientists to understand just how much the public loses out. It's a lot: tinyurl.com/bdey86su
A beeswarm chart of canceled NIH grants showing the years into each project when the funding was pulled. Each dot represents a terminated grant and is colored by the number of publications associated with the project: none, one to four or five or more. The grants are separated into thee rows based on the award type (R01, U01, U54). RO1 research projects had the most terminations, which occurred at all stages of research, from the project onset to 7+ years in. Most grants were canceled short of the 4-5 year lifespan of a typical grant, and 40% of R01s had no publications at the time of termination. Projects that had been active for longer had more publications, suggesting that more findings are disseminated in the later stages of these grants.

There are basically two groups of students being deported: a) those who have engaged in political speech, which has gotten the most attention; b) those who have had minor infractions with the law like a speeding ticket, which is likely the larger group. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-attack...
Students removed for using political voice or being associated with protests — These are the most visible and obviously political cases, raising troubling issues about free speech. This includes Mahmoud Khalil, a former student who was a visible figure in protests in Columbia, Badar Khan Suri, an Indian scholar at Georgetown University whose studies peacebuilding, and or Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish PhD student at Tufts co-wrote an op-ed in a student newspaper opposing the war in Gaza.

Students removed for minor infractions with the law — This is likely the majority of cases, but Rubio does not mention them. Here, students removed not for political voice, but for low-level engagements with law enforcement. Dozens of students reported that their visas were revoked for traffic violations, such as speeding. One immigration lawyer said: “This is totally unprecedented…A brush with law enforcement that didn’t necessarily result in an arrest or a conviction is all it took.” Her client had a DUI from a decade ago, which he disclosed when applying for a new visa, which was approved. But now that visa has been revoked. Another immigration lawyer spoke to a woman who had been arrested when a man assaulted her; police subsequently acknowledged she was the victim, but her visa was terminated anyway.
