This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we're highlighting the challenges of managing a long-term condition, like Addison's or adrenal insufficiency, and how emotional stress impacts our steroid replacement dosing 💊 Learn more on our website 🔗 www.addisonsdisease.org.uk/coping-with-psychological-stress
A purple background filled with rows of concerned-faced yellow emojis.

Bold, white text in the centre reads: "COPING WITH EMOTIONAL STRESS" and underneath it says, "with Addison's disease or adrenal insufficiency."

The Addison's Disease Self-Help Group white logo is in the bottom centre.A purple background featuring a white box with black quotation marks.

Black text reads:
"Lived experiences bring into focus the effects of emotional stress on people living with Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency.

Guidelines exist on how to manage cortisol replacement in times of physical stress such as infections or surgery. However, it’s difficult to define how emotional and psychological challenges affect the stress response, mostly because each challenge is unique and individuals may respond in different ways."

The phrase "emotional stress" in the first paragraph is highlighted in bold.

The Addison's Disease Self-Help Group white logo is in the bottom centre.A purple background with a white text title reads: "NEED EXTRA SUPPORT?" with the words "We're here for you 🤝" underneath.

Three different logos follow. The first is for the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group. Text next to the logo reads: "ADSHG Online Forum
Share experiences, ask questions and discuss the practicalities of living with adrenal insufficiency, including Addison's disease."

The second is the Rareminds logo. The text reads: "Rareminds Wellbeing Hub
Resources and information on a range of topics to support mental health whilst living with a rare condition."

The third is The Wren Project's logo with the text:
"The Wren Project
Offering free, ongoing listening support allowing you to talk about the emotional impact of your diagnosis."

At the bottom is a link to the ADSHG webpage: www.addisonsdisease.org.uk/coping-with-psychological-stress. This appears in a white search bar with a magnifying glass and a cursor icon at either side of the link text.

🧠 It’s Mental Health Awareness Week The connection between mental health and homelessness is deep, persistent - and too often unmet. Recent research shows: ➡️ Significant mental health needs before homelessness ➡️ Lack of access to support services ➡️ Rising self-medication to help with symptoms

The image is a Kidney Care UK graphic announcing "It's Mental Health Awareness Week" from 11-17 May 2026. It features cute cartoon illustrations of a heart and brain holding hands with a teal background. There's an invitation to explore strategies for supporting mental health. An infographic titled "1 Mindfulness." It explains that mindfulness involves focusing on the present and understanding thoughts and feelings. It mentions that living with kidney disease can make mindfulness challenging. The infographic includes a section titled "How can I become more mindful?" with suggestions: Notice the small things, Name your thoughts, Regular practice, Try something new, Stick with it. A sidebar notes mindfulness should accompany medical treatment and to consult healthcare providers about medication and any issues.Emotional resilience infographic titled "2 Emotional resilience." It explains the concept and offers tips on becoming more resilient, such as thinking about important people in your life, accepting your situation, and making room for feelings. This image presents a table contrasting negative self-talk with positive thinking. Negative statements like "I’ve never done it before" are countered with positive ones such as "This is a chance to learn something new." Other negative thoughts, such as "I’m too lazy/tired to get this done," are reframed positively as "I'll rethink my priorities to achieve this." The table encourages shifting from self-doubt to proactive, affirming perspectives.

The challenges facing the NHS require a radical solution. The healthcare system is awash with data, but short on actionable insight. There’s too much focus on looking back and not enough looking forwards, scaling and sharing learning to tackle variation. A new way of working is required.
