In my course on Human Evolution, the first assignment is to identify a misunderstanding or misuse of human evolution in popular culture. A fun way to gauge pre-existing knowledge among students. I also try to take part in the assignment myself and so allow myself an annual (pedantic) comment.

Let's talk about AI in archaeology journalism. NB: Never use AI to illustrate news stories on the ancient world (or really ever). Beyond just ethics, the public cannot tell that this is a fake image of the mummified remains found with a Homer papyrus on his abdomen. These images are taken as real.

The Faculty of Archaeology at Leiden hosts the annual meeting of the Oriental Numismatic Society and they are holding a coin auction 😱 I think any trade in Antiquities ultimately promotes looting. As archaeologists we should be more outspoken against attaching commercial value to heritage.

Metal detecting is not just problematic in the Netherlands. I think we should address the myth of the detectorist as a citizen scientist. Citizen science is about cooperation and co-creation. Here, the best-case scenario is reporting finds after the fact, worst-case: illegal trade in antiquities.

An inscription from a temple to Serapis in York, possibly built during the stay of the emperor Septimius Severus and family c.208-211 CE. The northern-most attested temple to an Egyptian god, the York temple may have also housed shrines to Isis, Harpocrates and Anubis. 🏺 #AncientBluesky #Egyptology
