This should be illegal (not that that would matter in the US). As I get ready for another semester, I’m struggling with finding ways to show that I’m hopeful about addressing climate change. What future do my students have? What future do my kids have? It’s all being given away so quickly.

I am honored to have received this year’s Bryant University College of Health and Behavioral Sciences recognition for Research and Publication. This has been a challenging academic year for many reasons, so I am beyond excited to end the year with such an achievement! Full details in the Alt text.
These recognitions are awarded to an individual. Realistically, I couldn’t have received this without the incredible support system I have around me from within and beyond Bryant. From family and friends to colleagues and collaborators from around the world, so many people have helped me along the way.

Additionally, I’ve been more-than-fortunate to have been invited to join many research projects over the years on a range of topics that span a timeframe of nearly 16 million years. Publications are often how we recognize success in academia, yet so much of the scientific process is the unplanned office chat, cross-disciplinary lab analyses, borrowing lab supplies when in a pinch (thanks Christopher Reid), being encouraged to pursue research interests, and of course, the students that help out along the way and often don’t recognize how essential they are to the entire thing.

A big part of this recognition is related to my NSF project Ecological Resilience of Afromontane Forests. This project was something I started with Makarius Itambu while a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology and I am exceptionally grateful for their support over the years and look forward to continuing this project with researchers from the institute.

This funding would also not have been possible without the support of so many people from across Bryant University and assistance from Goshen Consulting. There are so many people that I don’t think I can thank enough, especially Kirsten Hokeness, Joseph Trunzo, Ph.D. and Jennifer Hurrell, Adam Muccino, Wendy Samter, and Rupendra Paliwal, and Hong Yang and Qin Leng, two mentors and friends that I've been working with since I was an undergrad ~20 years ago!

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of Kelly Patalano. No one is more encouraging and understanding, even when I’m away for fieldwork for weeks at a time. She has to deal with me on a daily basis, but continues to endorse my academic career.

Here in the U. S., we’re paying companies hundreds of millions of dollars to not build offshore wind, all while our energy costs continue to rise. Meanwhile, China just installed the world’s largest floating wind turbine platform that will power 24,000 households and reduce energy costs.
DOI issued a statement on Monday saying Bluepoint Wind offshore New York and Golden State Wind offshore California “each separately agreed to voluntarily end their offshore wind leases” and not to pursue any new offshore wind projects in the United States. DOI put the value of the lease agreements and potential reimbursements at $765 million for Bluepoint and $120 million for Golden State.

https://www.utilitydive.com/news/two-more-offshore-wind-projects-scrapped-under-trump-administration-pressur/818681/The Three Gorges Pilot consists of a 16 MW turbine, a semi-submersible floating foundation and a new mooring system. The platform measures approximately 80.8 metres in length and 91 metres in width, with a displacement of 24,100 tonnes. The turbine features a 252-metre rotor diameter, with a swept area equivalent to around seven football fields and a blade tip height of over 270 metres.

The project incorporates several new technologies, including a novel mooring system, an active ballast system, a smart monitoring system, and a 66 kV dynamic subsea cable, the developer said.
