Its a wrap. What a unique opportunity we had here at #ALPOLE #Sion with the @embl.org AML lab! We sampled... a lot. We worked... hard. And we had a lot, a lot, but really alot of fun. >30 ECR trained >500 distinct samples across 2 weeks + too many protists awwwed at. An amazing community growing.

For two weeks, our entire lab is dropping everything to focus on one mission: deploying @embl.org's Advanced Mobile Laboratory to cultivate microbial eukaryotes from Alpine ecosystems. Our dream? Isolating new #Ichthyosporeans never cultured before. Let's see what we find. 🔬🏔️

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Chandler Fulton. I met him a few times & recently served with him on a PhD committee. A quick digest : #Cellularization runs on two separable modules: 🧭 MTs + #MTOCs → spatial patterning (where furrows go) ⚙️ #Actomyosin + membranes→ mechanical ingression (how furrows grow) Disrupt either one and the process breaks — but in different ways.

At this high resolution, we also caught something new: Using the new #HAK-Actin #UExM probe, we saw that #Actin accumulates at the furrow base before compartments fully seal ➡️ they're still open at the bottom. ➡️ The #multicellular epithelium-like stage is shorter than we previously proposed.

Using #UExM, we could finally see the MT network. Two populations: Cortical MTs=from MTOCs to the cortex, spacing nuclei evenly Furrow-tracking MTs=elongating with the ingressing membrane.

We knew from previous work MTs weren't strictly required for #cellularization ! PM furrows still form without them,but things go wrong. Turns out MTs are essential for spatial fidelity: without them, furrows misdirect, nuclear spacing goes haywire, and dynamics is slower!
