This is a moral atrocity and it needs to be loudly condemned as such. There is a reason that democracies *don't* do publicly televised executions (and why many don't execute people at all): it inculcates and rewards bloodthirst, which corrupts the spirit and corrodes the foundation of the polity.

I feel I spend half my life thinking I know far too little about a subject (any subject) to have a worthwhile opinion (or regretting having had an opinion) and the other half thinking that jesus fuck, people who know NEGATIVE amounts about the same subject sure do keep talking. neither feels great

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Why talk about how nuts the AI rationalist sex cult is, and not just focus on the (very real) risks and harms of AI? Well, when we're discussing "who should get to regulate AI, and how," I think it's VERY relevant to talk about the antisocial, unsettling ways many people running US AI think.

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

To fix this problem, researchers need to start approaching these things with pre-fixed questions, clear documented methodologies, establishing deterministic qualifiers for epistemic truth and a means of at the very least identifying non-LLM ways of verifying claims made by LLM Investigator agents.

If "legitimate concerns" were considered to excuse illegitimate methods, then nobody from Just Stop Oil or Palestine Action would have been arrested. So we know it doesn't. In fact that phrase is only ever used in one context. Only in that context is uniformed mob intimidation "peaceful protest"

The structuring logic of all of this, from the English Channel to Kabul, is a belief that the peoples of Afghanistan and elsewhere can always be subjected to the violence of western militarism, but can never be subjects to whom that militarism might one day be compelled to answer.

Probably worth remembering that as a journalist employed by the public broadcaster participates in the generalised moral panic about Afghan refugees desperately fleeing the violence of the Taliban after decades of war, our own military is pushing to shield soldiers from prosecution for war crimes.
A BBC journalist waist deep in sea water haranguing people who are very likely victims of British militarism and may even have been allies

A screenshot of a search result on a website titled "NEXUS | Identity Document Database" showing a locked Minnesota driver's license record for "PETER HEG******." A driver's license portrait of Peter Hegseth appears on the left, next to mostly redacted information fields, including ID number, birth date (1980), and address, followed by a prompt to purchase the full record for $100.00.

this sort of invocation of 'parental rights' sure does sound familiar from a bunch of contemporary political debates, huh? (it's from an 1840 pamphlet and 'interfere[nce] to the extent here proposed' refers to making it illegal to have eight year olds working ten hour shifts in coal mines)
"I have heard it said that to interfere to the extent here proposed would be humanity running riot, and exceeding all reasonable bounds; that it would be an encroachment on parental rights, and would be at variance with all sound principles of legislation. So far from thinking this to be the case, it [...]"

there seems to be a whole thing where a lot of MPs seem to think that if they say the right magic words to get the optics of their rhetoric to land well that will...override the actual impacts of the actual policies somehow. she wants a speech that would have made that policy palatable. none exist.
