This week’s image is of NGC 6164-5! Captured by Gemini South, this dramatic inverted S-shaped cloud is a nebula sculpted by gases ejected from the rapidly aging, massive star at its core. Check out the 🧵 for another paper. #Astronomy 📸 in thread
An image of the emission nebula NGC 6164-5 set against a black, star-filled background. At the very center shines the exceptionally bright star HD 148937, radiating intense white and purple light. Surrounding the star is a thick, glowing bipolar cloud of gas and dust that forms an inverted S-shape with somewhat rectangular, rounded corners. The outer edges of these nebula lobes glow brightly in striking orange and reddish hues, especially along the top-right and bottom-left curves. The interior of the nebula, closer to the central star, features darker, heavily textured clouds in shades of deep red, brown, and purple. Several prominent stars with diffraction spikes and countless smaller, fainter stars are scattered throughout the surrounding space.

Saturn Rises Behind A World of Haze - From Ian Regan - flic.kr/p/2fpiy2Z
The Saturn image—captured on May 4, 2005—was created using raw monochrome images taken with the Cassini spacecraft's wide-angle camera (WAC) via red, green and blue filters. Assembly by Val Klavans.

The Titan image—captured on March 31, 2005—was created in a manner similar to that of the Saturn composite. Assembly by Val Klavans.

These two color composites were merged in Paint Shop Pro 9, using a special 'mask' layer, created by Ian Regan and Val Klavans.

Smile's X-ray camera was also successfully switched on and has taken its first images. Though the camera itself is working very well, the teams are currently working on reducing some unwanted light that was detected, even if its amount will naturally reduce over the coming weeks.
Smile's first test X-ray image shows a supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The image looks like a static noise picture in red hues. Several brighter, whiter spots are visible, with one of them circled and labeled as supernova remnant N132D.

A dramatic, high-contrast, black-and-white photograph of a Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur skull. The composition utilizes striking Chiaroscuro lighting to plunge the background into pure darkness, making the skeletal texture pop with intense highlights and deep shadows. Strong vertical lines dominate the frame, emphasized by the long, dagger-like teeth lining the open jaws and the sharp, fractured contours of the fossilized bone. The photo uses a tight, low-angle, upwards-looking perspective that forces the viewer into the gaping maw of the creature, creating a visceral sense of texture, scale, and ancient power through its harsh monochrome tones.

Constance Baker Motley's strategic legal mind fundamentally reshaped the legal landscape of desegregation. As the principal female attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, she was a leading legal architect of the #CivilRights movement. She died #OTD in 2005. 🧵
A black-and-white close-up portrait of Constance Baker Motley (September 14, 1921 – September 28, 2005), the trailblazing civil rights attorney and first Black woman appointed as a federal judge. Photographed against a plain, neutral background, she poses facing forward with her torso angled slightly to the right, looking just past the camera. She wears her dark hair styled in a voluminous, soft-curled bob with a side part. Her expression is warm and confident, marked by a slight, serene smile and direct, engaged eyes. She is dressed in her black judicial robes, featuring structured pleats down the front, accessorized with simple white button earrings and a delicate bead necklace peeking through the V-neckline. The composition uses soft, flattering lighting that highlights her features, creating a dignified, commanding, and historically significant mood that reflects her trailblazing legal legacy.

A black-and-white studio portrait of Bessie Smith (1894–1937), the legendary Black blues singer known as the “Empress of the Blues” and one of the most influential vocalists in American music history. In this full-length, dynamic image, she stands confidently in the center of the frame, arms gracefully outstretched in a theatrical pose of joyful expression. She wears a shimmering, light-colored 1920s flapper-style gown covered in intricate beadwork, fringe, and floral appliqués at the waist, with a sheer overskirt and dark heeled boots. Her short dark hair is neatly styled, and her face is lit with a radiant, open-mouthed smile that radiates power, charisma, and delight. The dark, softly draped studio backdrop and dramatic lighting emphasize her commanding stage presence.

A full-length photograph of Dr. Wangari Maathai (1940–2011), the renowned Kenyan environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She stands outdoors, smiling warmly at the camera with her hands gently supporting the stem of a young green sapling growing from the soil, symbolizing her foundational work with the Green Belt Movement. Dr. Maathai is dressed in vibrant traditional African attire, featuring a matching brown and black patterned top and a dynamic patterned skirt block-printed with white, black, and brown geometric motifs. A matching fabric headwrap is beautifully gathered atop her head. She wears a watch on her left wrist. The composition places her centrally within a lush, natural environment filled with green foliage, leafy bushes, and ferns against a soft-focus backdrop of a stone wall.
