This picture was inspired by the traces of theropod leks (Ostendichnus) we have from the early Cretaceous. They were made by a small-to-mid-sized North American biped that may have made these scrapes as a mating thing. #paleoart #sciart #art #artist #paleontology #artistonbluesky #originalart

A juvenile Fona rushes through a group of lekking Nedcolbertia along the Western Interior coast. My overall guiding vibe when doing this one was “child lost at a convention.” #paleoart #sciart #art #artist #paleontology #artistonbluesky #originalart

A small ornithopod Fona rushes through a flock of birdlike Nedcolbertia scraping nests and bickering at one another on a Cretaceous coastline.

Thylacines are tough but cool. You have a lot less leeway with modern animals, of course, because there exists photographic reference; plus mammal head shapes take a lot more effort to capture (they're fleshy)! #paleoart #sciart #art #artist #paleontology #artistonbluesky #originalart

Scientists improve on photosynthesis by genetically engineering plants

Ever since Thomas Malthus issued his dire prediction in 1789 that population growth would always exceed food supply, scientists have worked to prove him wrong.

And just the ref sheet. A lot of thought went into this creature and how it would act and behave, as well as its strategies for survival and symbiosis with the crystals on its back. Read alt text for neater writing. #specbio #art #artist #creaturedesign #artistonbluesky #originalart

-Nictating membrane protects eyes
-No eyelids, but a mineralized cornea
-Flat teeth
-Big jaw muscles
-Teeth on palate too
-Pupil shrinks if scared or hurt
-Crystal denticles form "skin chainmail"
-Crystals control its body manually. It is aware the whole time
-Glass armor protects from sharp surfaces
-Heatproof pads on anti-slip gecko feet
-Crystal fibres carry sensory input as light like fiber optics
-The crystal is in fact a parasitic virus that controls the glassback
-Fibers controlled via piezoelectric deformation
-Parabola face+asymmetrical ears
-Tails pry armor off prey
-Each "head" delivers a different venom: cyto/myo/neurotoxic
-By reading the flashes of its crystal, you can predict its attacks
-Dazzle camouflage
-Each "head" is crystalline and light receptive; optical input w/ hollow needle at end
-"Heads" form a laser; held high above the body like a judgmental council
-Born glassless, but parasites are already in blood
-Seals wounds with crystal blood
