#AlphabetChallenge #WeekMforMachinery Have you heard of the CERN Large Hadron Collider in Geneva that smashes proton beams together at near the speed of light to study the fundamental building blocks of the universe & to recreate the Big Bang's conditions? (See AltTxt.) #Photography #Physics #ECK
This photo captures a dramatic close-up view of a massive particle detector from CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), specifically resembling the intricate layers of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment.

This image is featured as part of the physics and astrophysics collections within the Welch Hall: Matter & Motion permanent exhibition at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Located underground near Geneva, Switzerland, the actual LHC is the world's most powerful particle accelerator, designed to smash proton beams together at near the speed of light to study the fundamental building blocks of the universe and recreate conditions from just after the Big Bang. At the Houston museum, this striking visual serves as an educational tool to introduce visitors to high-energy physics, subatomic particles, and advanced scientific experimentation.

Visually, the photo focuses on the concentric, circular arrangement of complex electronic tracking components and calorimeters designed to capture subatomic particle collisions. Bright blue and white light radiates intensely from the innermost central core, contrasting sharply with the deep copper and warm orange tones of the surrounding structural machinery.

#Architecture #ModernArt "Broken Obelisk" in the reflecting pool outside the Rothko Chapel, part of the De Menil museum campus. Not Houston's finest hr. 😢 (See AltTxt for the backstory re #MLK, racism & #CivilRights) #ClassicMono #StreetPhotography #Photography #Photographers #ECK #UrbanGaze #BnW
"Broken Obelisk," a sculpture by Barnett Newman inspired by & officially dedicated to civil rights leader MLK, Jr after his assassination. It was meant to be given as a partial gift to the city of Houston who wanted the sculpture but refused in the ultra racist 1960s to allow any official dedication to Dr. King.

The uber-wealthy, liberal De Menil philanthropists who had offered to match its price with Houston got so angry at the city's racism that they bought it outright themselves & set it in a reflecting pool the way the artist wanted outside the Rothko Chapel (that they were building themselves with Mark Rothko). They also included a permanent message near the sculpture regarding the controversy so that everyone would know what Houston did and the controversy behind it as well as their own fierce dedication to civil rights for all.

Visually, this is a high contrast vertical black and white photo showing the sculpture which consists of a massive, dark Cor-Ten steel pyramid base meeting the fine point of an upside-down, broken obelisk shaft, creating a tense, singular point of contact that drives a strong vertical axis up through the frame.

The heavy, textured surfaces of the sculpture provide a deep, matte contrast against the bright, mirrored water below and the brilliant, cloud-filled sky above. In the background, the low, minimalist, and geometric concrete architecture of the Rothko Chapel mirrors the crisp, angular lines of the sculpture's base. Lush, leafy trees flank the scene, framing the composition with organic textures that contrast beautifully against the sharp, hard-edged geometry of the artwork and architecture.

A photo of the the exterior walkway and courtyard of the Menil Museum Drawing Institute in Houston. Visually, the photo shows a modern, open-air architectural corridor characterized by dark, textured wooden walls on the left and right, contrasted against a brilliant white, geometric origami-inspired canopy overhead. A sleek, minimalist wooden bench sits along the left wall, drawing the eye toward the bright, sunlit pathway that opens up in the background. The architecture relies heavily on strong linear elements and intense contrast, using the sharp diagonal lines of the angular roof and the parallel vertical lines of the timber cladding to create a dramatic sense of depth as well as contrasts to the more organic, natural elements like the trees.

#CityScapes #TextureTuesday Houston's cool skywalks: an above-ground extension of the business & law district’s huge subterranean tunnel world that's 6 miles long, AC'd, & connects 95 blocks of financial & court buildings, shops, restaurants #UrbanGaze #Architecture #Photography #StreetPhotography
A colourful street-level perspective of the downtown Houston financial district captures the striking interplay between the city’s corporate architecture and its elevated infrastructure. The multi-tiered, reddish-pink glass towers rising prominently on the right are part of the Houston Center complex —specifically showcasing the post-modern geometric grids of the LyondellBasell Tower and the accompanying office blocks along Louisiana Street. In the upper-left background, the iconic curved blue facade of the 71-story Wells Fargo Plaza stands as Texas’ third-tallest building.

Stretching diagonally across the frame as a dark black contrasting fashion is the Chevron complex skywalk, one of Houston's signature enclosed skywalks, an above-ground extension of the city’s massive pedestrian tunnel system. Spanning more than six miles and connecting 95 city blocks, this climate-controlled network allows thousands of downtown workers to navigate safely between offices, retail shops, and restaurants without ever braving the intense Texas heat or street-level traffic.

Driving in Houston is a terrifying experience. Doubly so in inclement weather. So driving on the notorious 59 in *torrential monsoon rains*? Pretty sure it's going to kill me one day. If not from huge speeding semis, then from Texans in gigantic trucks going 99 (w/ possible road rage & guns).

A low-angle, vertical colour photo captures a dramatic, canyon-like view of downtown Houston’s skyscrapers, emphasizing their contrasting architectural styles and the play of late afternoon light. Towering on the left, the Wells Fargo Plaza showcases a faceted, deep-amber glass facade that brilliantly reflects the warm, golden sun, while adjacent to it rises the sleek, cylindrical form of the Heritage Plaza (frequently recognized for its Mayan-inspired crown, though here emphasizing its smooth, green-tinted glass curtain wall). An enclosed pedestrian skybridge spans the street below, cutting a dark, diagonal, sharp geometric line across the lower third of the frame. The dramatic upward perspective forces the eye toward a moody, overcast sky, while the mirrored surfaces of the surrounding glass-and-steel monoliths create complex, layered reflections of light and shadow, casting a striking glow across the entire scene.

I gather honeycombing in rock is called tafoni. Much honeycombing is weather - related, but here the park ranger says it is helped along by people digging into the soft cliff material. #Photography #LincolnBeachOregon #Tafone #Tafoni #BeachCliffs
This is a photo of a seaside cliff made of mudstone and siltstone. The colors are in bands, representing various geological processes over time. The top band is grayish yellow, a mix of dune sand and volcanic ash, apparently from the Pleistocene. Below is a golden yellow band and then a red and umber band, formed from ancient sea beds in the Neogene and Paleogene eras. I am not much of a geologist, so this is handwavy. However, the interesting feature here is the small cave and the cliff wall riddled with small holes, like a honeycomb. These are called tafoni, and are the result of erosion of the soft cliff material. This honeycombed cliff wall is partly the result of people digging little holes, and the high tides further eroding them, making the holes deeper and smoother. You can see sand flowing at the bottom, which is added to the beach. There is a small park at the top of this cliff, and who knows how long it will last?

A low-angle, horizontal, colour, and symmetrical shot of a massive, towering glass skyscraper as seen and as framed through a massive, classical brick and stone archway.

The postmodern tower is Houston's Williams Tower, previously called the TransCo Tower, and it stands centrally in the background, its facade composed of sleek vertical columns of blue-tinted reflective glass that mirror the bright blue sky and scattered white clouds. The tower rises from a wider glass base, tapering sharply upward with rigid, linear symmetry.

In the foreground, a manicured green lawn stretches toward the base of the skyscraper, bordered on both sides by rows of lush, green leafy trees that draw the eye toward the center of the frame. The heavy, warm tones of the rustic brick archway frame the entire top and sides of the composition, creating a striking architectural contrast between traditional stone masonry and modern, soaring glass-and-steel design

A vertical, richly saturated colour photo of the famous 115-ft tall atrium lobby of Pennzoil Place in Houston.

Pennzoil Place in downtown Houston consists of two 36-story trapezoidal twin towers that are mirror images of each other, positioned just 10 feet apart. The structures feature a striking curtain wall of dark bronze-tinted glass and aluminum with distinctive 45-degree sloped rooflines. At street level, the narrow gap between the towers is connected by a dramatic, 115-foot-tall pyramid-shaped glass atrium.

The building is a recognized Houston landmark, famous for its two trapezoidal towers, & was declared "Building of the Decade" by the media.

The photo here features part of its iconic glass-pyramid roofs and modern red lounge seating. This striking architectural space was completed in 1975 and designed by Pritzker-award winning architect Philip Johnson and his partner John Burgee.

In the photo, a corner of the indoor atrium is shown, featuring geometric glass architecture and stark contrasts. Sharp angled window panes cover the ceiling and left wall, casting cross-hatched shadows over a modern seating area below. Two bright red, high-backed privacy chairs sit in the foreground next to square concrete blocks used as tables. Large, matte-black dome pendant lights hang low over the seating spots. In the background, frosted glass partitions separate small workspace pods, and built-in planters with green foliage add a natural touch to the industrial design.

The architectural style of this atrium is Postmodern (specifically Late Modernism), while the interior design reflects a Minimalist Contemporary style.

A low-angle, upwards-looking vertical shot captures the majestic Williams Tower, showcasing its iconic postmodern, stepped architecture clad entirely in sleek glass panels. The skyscraper's facade behaves like a massive mirror, beautifully reflecting a vibrant blue sky filled with scattered white clouds, creating a fluid, shimmering effect across its gridded window lines. Standing tall from a manicured green lawn, the skyscraper tapers dramatically as it ascends toward a pointed crown, flanked subtly on the right by trees and a pair of distant flags.

Completed in 1983 and rising 64 stories, the 909-foot Williams Tower stands as a monumental landmark in Houston’s Uptown District, famous for being one of the tallest skyscrapers in the United States located outside of a city's central business district. Previously, the TransCo Tower, as it used to be called, was the tallest building in the world that was outside of a city's business district.

A still green lake in a mountain cirque under heavy gray clouds, with a few gaps of blue breaking through. Jagged dark rock spires rise on the left, streaked with lingering snow that runs in white chutes down to the talus below. To the right, a steep forested ridge climbs to a rounded summit, its lower slopes bright with spring green. The dark conifers along the shoreline reflect cleanly in the calm water, and in the foreground young firs, dry grasses, and a jumble of lichen-covered boulders crowd the near edge of the lake.

#LightAndShadow The light & lines of "billowing white clouds:" #Deconstructivist #architecture at the Kinder Museum of Modern Art, part of #MFAH. Architect Steven Holl sees light as his most imp. design tool. #AlphabetChallenge #UrbanGaze #Photography #Photographers #Abstractia #Geometry #ECK
An eye-level, wide-angle interior photograph of the Nancy and Rich Kinder Museum for modern art showcases its dynamic, deconstructivist architecture defined by sharp, intersecting planes and sweeping linear geometries. The building was designed by architect Steven Holl to resemble billowing clouds, only deconstructed. In the photo, a prominent, softly glowing golden light strip illuminates a long, white diagonal ramp that leads the eye across the foreground and through the expansive multi-level atrium. Dramatic, angular ceiling cutouts create a layered canopy, channeling diffused natural daylight from clerestory windows to interplay with recessed accent spotlights. The stark contrast between deep shadows and bright, illuminated white concrete surfaces emphasizes the building's complex sculptural shapes.

As one article put it, "Light functions as a fundamental building material rather than a mere utility; a vibrant, warmly glowing band of light underscores the central ramp, providing a strong horizontal anchor against the soaring, multi-story voids. This artificially lit path draws a sharp contrast with the soft, ethereal natural daylighting flowing into the heart of the building through strategically sliced clerestories and irregular ceiling apertures. These shifting channels of light alter the visibility of the building's geometry throughout the day, masterfully emphasizing the interaction between geometric form, shadow, and open space."

#LightAndShadow The textural coolness & beauty of #skyscrapers, Exhibit No. 38. #ClassicMono #UrbanGaze #ECK #StreetPhotography #Photography #Photographers #Architecture #GeometricShapes #Abstractia #BnWphotos #BWphotography
A vertical black and white photograph captures a towering, modern skyscraper from a low angle, emphasizing its grand scale against a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. The building features a striking architectural design with a cantilevered upper block of vertical striped panels that shifts over a glass-walled lower section supported by large columns. The photographer utilizes high-contrast monochrome tones to highlight the geometric patterns of the windows, the reflective glass surfaces, and the deep textures of the surrounding clouds, creating a powerful, artistic composition that focuses on lines, shadows, and light.

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekLforLookingIn Staring into the literal jaws of death & terror. Enjoying the frisson of horror from the safety & distance of evolution. #ClassicMono #BWPhotography #UrbanGaze #Paleontology #ECK #Dinosaurs #Photography #Photographers #BnWphotos #Stunday #TRex #HMNS
A dramatic, high-contrast, black-and-white photograph of a Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur skull. The composition utilizes striking Chiaroscuro lighting to plunge the background into pure darkness, making the skeletal texture pop with intense highlights and deep shadows. Strong vertical lines dominate the frame, emphasized by the long, dagger-like teeth lining the open jaws and the sharp, fractured contours of the fossilized bone. The photo uses a tight, low-angle, upwards-looking perspective that forces the viewer into the gaping maw of the creature, creating a visceral sense of texture, scale, and ancient power through its harsh monochrome tones.

#BlueskyArtShow #Lights 2 youngsters argue about taking selfies inside "Chromosaturation MFAH" while 2 oldsters wait & look on in amusement. (Art museum info in AltTxt) #AlphabetChallenge #WeekLforLookingIn #ColorADay #ECK #Abstractia #Geometry #Architecture #Photography #UrbanGaze #Photographer
A photo of one part of Chromosaturation MFAH, a site-specific immersive light installation created by the pioneering Venezuelan kinetic artist Carlos Cruz-Diez for the underground tunnels filled with modern art under the Kinder Museum, part of the larger Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH).

Via Google & the museum: "The artist's goal was to isolate color in its purest state as an active, physical event taking place in space without the need for form or a canvas. It is designed to act directly on the viewer's retina, triggering a deep psychological and physical reaction as the human brain struggles to process the intense, monochromatic chambers."

By walking through the monochromatic red, green, and blue chambers, viewers experience color directly through their retinas, changing how their eyes and brain perceive reality with every step.

Because the installation keeps changing & rotating colours, it becomes almost like a living, transforming art work.

Visually, this image shows a vibrant, indoor rainbow-colored tunnel lit with saturated shades of green, yellow, orange, pink, and blue. Two young adults, a woman on the left and a man on the right, are walking toward each other on a highly reflective, polished floor that mirrors the bright colors of the walls. Further down the curved corridor, an older couple is walking in the same direction, adding a sense of depth to the glowing, futuristic walkway.

There are no greater, scarier, nor more virulently insulting 2 words in TV history than Kai Winn's "My child." I don't know how many times I've heard/watched Louise Fletcher utter those words & still, my skin crawls. Arguably, one of the greatest villains ever on any screen. #StarTrekDS9 #StarTrek
