There's wealth in the NE. It's just distributed more unequally than anywhere in the country bar London. One thing we don't talk about enough is the way the landlords enclosed the land then stole the coal / mineral wealth underneath it too. www.resilience.org/stories/2022...

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

This small glass flask once stood in the tomb of a Roman soldier in Colchester. It belonged to Marcus Favonius Facilis, a centurion of the Twentieth Legion stationed here nearly 2,000 years ago. His tomb was destroyed during Boudica’s revolt in AD 60/1, so objects like this survive almost by chance.
Light blue, translucent glass bottle with a rounded, pear-shaped body and a long, narrow neck that flares slightly at the rim. The surface is worn and weathered, showing signs of age including small scratches, mineral deposits, and embedded air bubbles. The glass is uneven in thickness, indicating it was likely hand-blown. The base is rounded without a defined foot, contributing to a slightly organic silhouette.
