I’ve just been named subject editor for the new “Animal ethics” area in the SEP, following my complaint that there are too few articles on this topic (serves me right for complaining). So stay tuned for new entries in the area, and hit me up with suggestions on topics that you think merit one!

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

The conflation of AI-critical with technophobic is tactical & infuriating. While accusing us of just knee-jerk hating tech, they’re enshittifying search engines, degrading digital archives, sundowning or enclosing popular tools, etc. We were all happily using that tech!

Mood-boosting benefits of birdsong drowned out by traffic noise, study finds
Even low levels of traffic noise can negate the benefits of listening to natural sounds, researchers say Hearing the trill or whistle of a bird while going about daily life is well known to boost people’s mood. But a new study suggests the psychological benefits of hearing birdsong are being threatened by traffic noise. Researchers found that even low levels of traffic noise negatively affected the benefits to wellbeing that could otherwise be derived from listening to natural sounds. Continue reading...

Advice I now give to my students: don't write using AI at all, at any stage (outlines, drafts, edits, anything). It's nearly unavoidable in searches. But in writing: draw a line. Be explicit: 'this is AI-free writing.' In some fields it will be good, soon, to have a reputation of this kind.

Very happy to announce that our article "Animals and Human Rights" is now out in Philosophy Compass. It was wonderful working on this with my friend and colleague Dr. Valérie G. Topf! Check it out here: compass.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Display of the abstract for the paper which reads "This article argues that human rights theory faces pressure from scholarship on animals. Because grounding human rights in
bare species membership seems implausible, most theories ground such rights in species neutral criteria. These criteria may be
naturalistic (based on sentience or autonomy, for example) or functionalist (based on the socio‐political role of rights). Standard
theories of human rights have not adequately addressed that many animals appear to meet these criteria, as we show that they
do across a range of arguments. However, consistency demands that if a being meets the criteria a theory stipulates for the
possession of human rights, they should be recognised as possessing such rights. This leaves human rights theory with three
options: it must either explain why these criteria are not met by animals after all, offer alternate criteria—or recognise many
animals as bearers of ‘human’ rights"
