More U.S. kids live in net worth poverty than income poverty, and almost no one studies it. Our new paper argues wealth deprivation shapes children's development in its own right, and that standard wealth measures miss the debts poorer families carry. academic.oup.com/cdpers/advan...

Welcome to the last half of the US federal fiscal year. Here is where we're at with National Science Foundation--the agency that funds basically everything other than biomedical research at American universities--grant numbers. grant-witness.us/funding_curv...
NSF grant curve from link for 2021 through 2026, with each year shown as a different color. By this point in the year, NSF made 3,300 or more grants in 2021-2024 and 2,087 in 2025. This year 737 have been awarded. Both this year and 2025 seem to have an odd slow down about now in the rate of new grants not present in earlier years, in addition to the general lower rates.NSF's geosciences directorate award numbers, basically identical in shape to the overall NSF curves. Prior years saw around 400-500 grants awarded by this point in the fiscal year, 2025 saw only 278 grants awarded, this year has only 95 grants awarded.

Our paper on improving statistical reporting in psychology is now online 🎉 As a part of this paper, we also created the Transparent Statistical Reporting in Psychology checklist, which researchers can use to improve their statistical reporting practices www.nature.com/articles/s44...
Transparent and comprehensive statistical reporting is critical for ensuring the credibility, reproducibility, and interpretability of psychological research. This paper offers a structured set of guidelines for reporting statistical analyses in quantitative psychology, emphasizing clarity at both the planning and results stages. Drawing on established recommendations and emerging best practices, we outline key decisions related to hypothesis formulation, sample size justification, preregistration, outlier and missing data handling, statistical model specification, and the interpretation of inferential outcomes. We address considerations across frequentist and Bayesian frameworks and fixed as well as sequential research designs, including guidance on effect size reporting, equivalence testing, and the appropriate treatment of null results. To facilitate implementation of these recommendations, we provide the Transparent Statistical Reporting in Psychology (TSRP) Checklist that researchers can use to systematically evaluate and improve their statistical reporting practices (https://osf.io/t2zpq/). In addition, we provide a curated list of freely available tools, packages, and functions that researchers can use to implement transparent reporting practices in their own analyses to bridge the gap between theory and practice. To illustrate the practical application of these principles, we provide a side-by-side comparison of insufficient versus best-practice reporting using a hypothetical cognitive psychology study. By adopting transparent reporting standards, researchers can improve the robustness of individual studies and facilitate cumulative scientific progress through more reliable meta-analyses and research syntheses.

I haven't seen people here mention this letter from the mayor of Illinois' 2nd-largest city (Aurora, 40+% Latino) to the Aurora Police following egregious attacks by immigration in Aurora and related protests So here it is!
Hello Chief and APD Leadership,

I just wanted to jot a quick thank you note for those who participated in this meeting with the Latino community about ICE in our neighborhoods.

Sadly, this problem is not going away anytime soon. Historically, the police have been on the wrong side of history during the civil rights movement and the labor movement - defending capital. The pivotal points in American history are when police realized that their solidarity should be with labor; not capital.

Labor vs. police: Learning from working-class history Workers World

In this current struggle, I believe that we are 2-3 years away from a moment where we see the shift in solidarity.

I would like to see Aurora lead, and show something different. It will create discomfort during the transformation. I noticed during the march towards Blue Kangaroo, when the police escort disappeared, that activists I didn't know used their vehicles to block the intersections and protect the marchers. All living things have the capacity to evolve and grow. Government is about to go through a huge evolutionary period and shed that which is not necessary, and re-focus on what is important.

As government continues to disintegrate from the top down, we have an opportunity to re-invent the ways we find food, water, shelter and protection.

We would like the Aurora Police Department to play a historic role in defending the United States of America, and our city against fascism. We have a unique opportunity to do something different, leave our mark in the history books, and make a difference. I'm excited about the opportunity and look forward to discussing it further.

Respectfully, John Laesch Mayor, City of Aurora laesch@aurora.il.us
