Nothing delivered via ::gestures vaguely:: THE SYSTEM is an evidence-based clinical practice. At best, you’re getting anecdotal vibes delivered by someone with some idea of mechanism. Even the insightful, artisanal, hand-crafted vibes. Anyway, here’s Wonderwall. open.spotify.com/playlist/7j5...

🔔 Call for Papers 🔔 I’m guest editing a Special Issue of Cognitive & Behavioral Practice Cognitive-Behavioral Approaches in Context www.sciencedirect.com/special-issue…
As sociopolitical crises of the past
 decade have made increasingly salient,
 cognitive-behavioral frameworks that
 are well-suited to treating pathology
located within the individual are not
 always well-suited to support work
 with clients whose distress is
 proportionate to the real
 environmental challenges they
 experience. This Special Issue of
 Cognitive & Behavioral Practice focuses
 on the concept of "environmental
pathology," which we use here to refer
 to social, cultural, political, and/or
 environmental circumstances within
 which significant distress or
 impairment are normative and
 proportionate responses. Examples
 include chronic exposure to
 discrimination such as racism,
 misogyny, or transphobia; realistic
 medical health risks such as
 pandemics; insufficient access to
 healthcare, food, or housing; military
violence; or realistic threat orWe are especially interested in
 manuscripts that describe the
 principled extension of evidence-based
 cognitive-behavioral principles to work
 with clients whose clinically significant
 distress or impairment could be
 reasonably described as healthy,
normal, or appropriate to their meso-
 or macro-systemic context. We also
 welcome articles focused on
 community-level interventions
 designed to prevent or reduce
 contextual barriers to mental health
and wellbeing. C&BP is a practitioner-
 oriented journal that publishes
 narrative and systematic reviews,
 research reports that include rich
 clinical descriptions, case series and
 studies, clinical commentaries, and
 treatment development reports. As
 such, articles should emphasize
material likely to be informative to
 clinical practice and supervision, such
 as detailed case descriptions, excerpts
from psychotherapy transcripts, andExample topics include:
 1. Ethical obligations, dilemmas, and responsibilities to consider when navigating
 environmental pathology in clinical practice
 2. Theoretical frameworks or suggested best practices for leveraging evidence-based
principles in the context of environmental pathology, particularly for concerns or
contexts that are not adequately addressed within the existing empirical
 literature.
 3. Global perspectives, such as considerations when translating evidence-based
practices between cultures and/or working with displaced clients or refugees.
 4. Empirical studies, meta-analyses, or intensive case series designs investigating
the efficacy of novel or established interventions for clients presenting with
distress or impairment associated with one or more forms of environmental
 pathology
 5. Primers, introductory papers, or case studies offering cognitive-behavioral
translations of practices from diverse theoretical orientations, cultures, or
epistemologies, supported by an appropriately critical review of relevant
 literatures
 6. Case studies, theoretical frameworks, or literature reviews evaluating diverse
practices for navigating discussions of politically-charged or taboo topics in
 assessment, therapy, or clinical research
 7. Strengths-based approaches, including empirical studies or literature reviews on
topics such as resilience, critical consciousness, neurodiversity, or post-traumatic

Any time I have a brilliant insight about systems of oppression, my next step is to figure out which Black woman scholar already explained the idea clearly decades ago. Behold, the “matrix of domination,” the system of power named by Collins (2000). The actual, literal matrix of domination.

Assume you have some power. Be critical of ideas and accepting of people. Create with care and purpose, and without fear. Do, or do not, or try — there is no correct answer. Everything would be safer and easier if we all spoke more openly. Fabulous is as fabulous does. Great minds think.

I’ve yet to see much discourse around the apocalyptic destruction that generative artificial intelligence is poised to wreak on the entire concept of journalism and fact checking. If deepfakes become legal, easy to create, and difficult to detect, ChatGPT essays will be the least of our concerns.

My bookstore is unapologetically leftist. I work very hard to curate our inventory. We often get compliments from customers. We also, sometimes, get people who wander around for a bit with a look of abject disgust on their face before quietly leaving. This, too, feels like a compliment.

I would like to gently remind academic psychology that we’re in this situation because of collective dereliction of duty. We are navigating systemic trauma. Actual progress is one of the options available to us. We’ll get there when we decide to stop relying on euphemism as a crutch.

I’m also pretty sure we just cracked the ‘satanic panic’ case. Memories can’t be ‘recovered’ — you either remember abuse or you don’t. Memory creation *is* impaired during traumatic events, though, and long-term trauma can cause memory problems. open.spotify.com/album/5yaumQ...

If you’ve never come out as #MeToo during your tenure review, I can’t fault you for being less well-versed in this particular manifestation of patriarchy. My experiences with it succeeded mostly in teaching me the mechanics of conspiracy, pissing me off, and incentivizing me to be loud as possible.

I think I understand the hesitation better now. I still notice some people and interest groups defending and exploiting the invisibility of the system of power. But for most people, and for many reasons, I think it’s just very difficult to translate implicit understanding into plain language.

This is figure 2, which shows examples of how active inference can be applied to understand post-traumatic stress disorder.

Yes, we desperately need viewpoint diversity. We need the views of people from diverse identities and backgrounds, and the views of women who aren’t trying to contort their points to be palatable under patriarchy. We could call it something like… diversity? inclusion? I’m just riffing here.

I’m so sad to hear this. Dr. Foa developed one of the three leading treatments for PTSD. I was privileged to learn it under her supervision. For the interested, the others are Cognitive Processing Therapy (developer: Dr. Patty Resick) and EMDR (developer: Dr. Francine Shapiro). (Notice a trend?)

I wish we had thought vaccines too. But gaslighting as public policy failed catastrophically. If you need evidence, look around. I refuse to endorse scientific malpractice so well-intentioned but deeply wrong scientists can double down on pseudoscience. If it makes me unpopular, so be it.

I’m spending the weekend in and around Minneapolis, and when I tell you, this city is not fucking around.
A large billboard visible on the drive in to Minneapolis. The background is half red and half blue with white font on both sides. The red side reads “NO KINGS” and the blue side reads “NO COWARDS”. Under both if reads “People over party” and gives a website link (MN50501.org)A sign with colorful font reading, “ALL ARE WELCOME IN MSP.” and solid black font reading “EXCEPT ICE.”

You are the only person with the power to decide who you are. You are not the only person with the power to decide which costumes are harmful. Genuinely trans or questioning? You’re valid. Be as you and as visible as it’s safe to be. Actually cis? Speak up — but do it in *your own* voice.

Trans people deserve the freedom to live their lives without being made into political pawns. When cis people use trans identities as avatars for their own struggles, it makes trans folx more vulnerable, not less. Same for other marginalized groups. You can’t protect someone by hiding behind them.

You should understand, that is what happened. The public learned to mistrust scientists and higher education because prominent scientists engaged in abuse, harassment, and coverup in public, then demanded that the witnesses mask their knowledge. Shock of shocks, it was not great marketing.

And if academic men would consider not driving the entire higher educational system into the ground by firmly and publicly branding it as cult and exploitation playground instead of place of respect and learning, everyone’s tenure and grant budget would be much obliged.

Clinical science as a field has actively — and at varying levels, knowingly — fed into systemic and structural gaslighting for decades. Why would academic gatekeepers — mostly middle aged and older white men — want us to believe that we’re imagining these abusive systems?
