25 'Hiroshima Maidens' received worse care from US surgeons with much less expertise treating nuclear-related burns than Japanese surgeons; the women's bodies were exposed for publicity; and they were RE-IRRADIATED in the belief this would reduce keloid scarring. 😱 www.ovid.com/jnls/journal...
Power, Politics & Surgical Ethics:
Reconstructing the Hiroshima Maidens Story
Historical analysis of the 1955 Mount Sinai-Hiroshima reconstructive surgery

Political Context
Cold War diplomacy framed survivors as svmbols of reconciliation
Public narratives stressed gratitute and peace.

Clinical Reality
Japanese surgeons held advanced knowledge.
Limited by postwar poverty & US censorship.

Ethical Reflection
Experimental radiotherapy re-exposed survivors.
Appearance prioritized over long-term safety.

Lessons for Modern Clinicians
Awareness of Power
Recognize how politics impact care.
Epistemic Humility
Multidisciplinary Input
Informed Consent:
Value diverse knowledge.
Collaborate across fields.
Ensure patients grasp risks

Ethical surgery demands more than technical skill. It requires awareness of the systems that shape care

There's something deliciously ironic about Ford--the assembly line innovator--having to hire back veteran engineers to fix quality problems induced by AI. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Ford Motor Co. took an unusually human approach to fixing its stubborn quality problems: It brought back what it calls “gray beard” engineers to help train younger staff and to reprogram the artificial intelligence tools that weren’t getting the job done.

THREAD: 1. Some years ago women academics contacted me unsolicited on Twitter (which I no longer use) about an academic in Melbourne. They’d made complaints to a faculty head about the man’s targeted, obsessive bullying of women colleagues, including First Nations women. The university kept him on.

Cocaine is one of the most widely abused illicit substances in the world, with an estimated 41 million adults reporting lifetime use in the United States alone (Gangu et al., 2022).
It has well-documented cardiovascular effects, including hypertension, tachycardia,
and vasoconstriction,
and these
have long been associated with acute ischemic events affecting the heart and brain. A less recognized capability is the drug's capacity to precipitate ischemia of the spinal cord, a resulting complication that is both debilitating and repeatedly underdiagnosed. Cocaine-induced acute spinal cord ischemia (ASCI) can result in immediate and permanent paralysis, complete loss of sensation below the level of injury, and autonomic dysfunction affecting bladder and bowel function. This kind of injury is devastating enough to leave patients dependent on lifelong rehabilitative care.

Cocaine is a bad, bad drug that a lot of people use. In the United States about 41 million adults have used cocaine at once. Cocaine is bad for your heart.
Can cause big problems. It can make your heart beat fast and your blood pressure go up. This can cause problems with your heart and brain.. Cocaine can also cause problems with your spinal cord. This can lead to bad injuries that can leave you paralyzed. You might not be able to feel anything below the injury. You might have problems with your bladder and bowel. This kind of injury is very serious. Can require a lot of care for the rest of your life.
A lot of doctors and people do not know about …

There's something particularly icky about being told I should have a 'playbook' for student engagement in higher education. It's not a game to improve statistics. If we don't recognise students as individual humans, it's not unsurprising they see HE as a customer service.
