Do wonder sometimes whether I should actually READ a Joyce Carol Oates book to fully contextualise the humour, but tbh it'd probably just ruin the experience of appreciating her poasting chops.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

the not all men paradox: Any man who actually says “not all men” in a conversation about how shitty men are is in fact, all men. Any man who deserves to say “not all men” knows to never say it in those conversations.

The inflation problem. My cartoon in today's @theageaustralia.bsky.social and @sydmorningherald.bsky.social
A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing a single mother, recently made homeless after defaulting on her mortgage repayments (as evidenced by visible paperwork), setting up a new home in a tent with her two young children. Surrounded by their essentials stored in storage and plastic bags, the baby crawls on the grass, his older brother heats some food over a camp stove, and his exhausted-looking mother blows up an air mattress. Watching her, the boy says, "Is this what they means when they say 'inflation is the problem,' Mum?"

If Shoebridge says he wants to replace Labor, it will be interesting to see if he has a plan that doesn't just involve him being performatively provocative. That would require a structure of policy, organisation and finance beyond what the Greens have been able to muster to date. 1/

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Except all of this would be entirely unnecessary just by having a functioning health care system where you just go to the doctor you want, and then go to any chemist/pharmacist to get what you need and insurance companies don’t get to force you to use specific providers or second guess your Dr.

If nothing else AI is making clear that there are people all around us for whom writing, art, and music are not communion with another mind, but just - wallpaper. Just pleasant things to look at. They think AI is conscious because they have no actual grasp of what it is to encounter another mind.

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

Always thought the AI being an existential threat was as much a submission fantasy as anything else. Those who promote it are desperate to be on what they see as the winning side. iow, they want the AI FACTION to be the existential threat, and they are desperate to be a part of that faction.

Bit sad about this. Latter-day Kohler had no respect left for the norms of finance and managed to craft pithy mini-segments that illustrated that. (David Chau does look like a solid successor, though)

We (the left) really beefed it when we uncritically accepted the framing that men were “just worried about fake accusations” when it was far more likely they *knew* a bunch of accusations were coming because they were guilty of them

Finally got around to Hades 2, and it's as good as advertised. It's interesting how they've treated the ramping difficulty in the game. Because it's a roguelike grinder you need to make bosses quite difficult at first encounter, but beatable on repetition. As well as acting as a difficulty gateway.
