Grew up in a UFW/IWW household. Now I’m a public to academic librarian, union thug, and general roustabout. Anonymous because I’m not tenured yet. Pro-Palestinian, pro-trans, anti-racist, anti-AI, and not fit for human consumption.

Union organizing has been loads of fun this year, and I want to share a few quick stories from office and lab visits to show that 1) it's not that hard to talk to colleagues, 2) interesting things happen, and 3) you build solidarity in the meantime.

we tracked months of rent payments to an estimated 13,000 families. the expected cost of rehousing those families, had they entered eviction, would be north of $218 million dollars. keeping them housed cost around $38-40 million

Another way to think about this (derived from Corey Doctorow’s work) is that AI, among other things, is a tool for breaking solidarities between exploited populations. AI Detection puts you on the side of a surveillance technology against your students.

When #LaborDay was established as a holiday in 1894, ~30 yrs from slavery’s abolishment, it represented a key U.S. paradox: Black workers were excluded from labor unions and benefits due to Jim Crow laws, systemic racism, sharecropping systems, and other exclusionary labor practices. #BlackSky

Unions promoted Jim Crow and racial exclusion in citizenship laws and neglect incarcerated workers. Some union leaders support ICE. And there are internal conflicts about the harms of AI. Unions are vital—and I’m active with mine—but, ultimately, unions are what we make them.

I just wanted to share this: Ohio is not the South. There were no de jure Jim Crow laws. Nevertheless today is the 50th anniversary of my city schools to open under desegregation order. 22 years after Brown. And we were the FIRST in Ohio. 4 years before Millennials started being born
Dayton city schools became the first in Ohio to open under a court-ordered desegregation plan on September 2, 1976, involving a complex pairing of 37 elementary and four high schools to integrate students across racial lines.
