On the one hand, universities are inherently quite poor places to produce knowledge, built as they are around networks of privilege and authority. But we really don’t have an alternative place for systematically building knowledge, so I’d like it if they could occasionally do some resisting.

Like most prohibition type rules this will end up backfiring in ways that get ever more dumb – not least that because teens aren't supposed to be on the network now, and only circumvent it via third-party tools, Australia can't hold social media companies responsible for harms they face on there.

See my thesis for research evidence of why a social media ban would be terrible for LGBTQIA youth. TLDR- when you belong to a geographically dispersed minority that your family don’t belong to, might even be hostile to- social media is likely your only lifeline for identity work and community.

The only truly irreversible thing a trans child is likely to do is take their own life. "What if they do something irreversible?" actually means "theyre not allowed to make a decision!" You cant undo or reverse any decision you make, you can simply change your mind later and handle the consequences
