Got a little pink ballot in the post from @ucuglasgow.bsky.social Did a little pink vote. Going to take it to a little red post box. Every academic job I’ve had has been in the shadow of redundancy & uncertainty. Welcome “permanent” colleagues. We’re all precarious now. Vote yes for something better
A pink ucu envelope. Partially inside is a ucu ballot statement on the dispute. The top line reads “Vote yes to defend jobs and promotions at Glasgow”

Who amongst us hasn’t had a little nibble on the young people’s productive lives? Nom nom nom. All the humanities and social science students I know have incredible skills. They question the world around them from injustices to mis/disinformation. And most of them work to cover their living costs.

It’s National Poetry Day. Please enjoy this poem I wrote called ‘The Research Interview’ [text in alt text on image]. It was published in 2022 in the feminist journal, Cultivate, and you can see it with all it’s publication pals here: www.cultivatefeministjournal.com/_files/ugd/7...
Research Interview

We face each other at this surface made of wood
this space familiar to you- the walls hold history
new campaign posters you explain, I nod; understood
you don't define the terms, do I see you reading me?

so why did you decide to participate l ask
emphasising decide- to be involved is a choice
reminding us both that this chat is a research task
one in which I hope I will do justice to your voice

Hours later I'll check you still consent to the study
but now we sit together in a moment in time
with your words you bring to life decades of history
interruptions of questions and laughter- yours and mine

as you speak the stories grow around us in the air
made solidly of words they flourish in this present
older terms once forgotten reappear as you share
you hesitate clocking me have you caused me offense

no tell me more about this language, your terms, your words
the air grows thick with history, older terms emerge
terms from others: embraced, refused; reclaimed names; codewords
then language a battleground as communities merge

Your memory nurtures the stories grown in this space
speaking back but looking up to the walls' current work
seeds of which sown in worn documents in the bookcase
now though newer generations take the reigns; teamwork

fresh voices with new terms, some offshoots from older texts
some brand new homegrown in grassroots' imagined future
some are old-made-new terms reimagined with new depths
you teach me delighted to be an introducer

I gather your words old and new in my hands gently
keeping safe, holding them in Dictaphone-arms with care
recorded while they grew not wishing to miss any
placed with the others; stories from those who chose to share

you smile now as our conversation draws to a close
can I keep that sense of you as words are analysed
will I keep in touch let you know how the research goes
careful not to lose these gently gathered living-person-words when research-words are revised and revised

Very niche question for other folks in Scotland who are still entitled to Covid vaccines. Are you getting a really reduced list of locations when you login? Folks entitled to only flu jabs seem to have more options. Is this a Covid jab thing? A health board thing? A Harvey can’t work websites thing?

This makes me really sad. The robots are apparently ‘citing’ my work & they’ve found an article that really carefully plays with temporality and flow of the text using footnotes. It’s meant to be a really fun read. I feel like it being hoovered up by the chatbots means it loses some of that magic.

So I have a “phone voice” which I think is polite. I don’t use it very often. Phone calls are a lot. I just had to phone the repairs company for our flat (joys of renting). And my phone voice has changed! It is both lower and possibly slightly less English. Welcome to dull things I find fascinating.

In terms of protesting the Welsh trans surgery ban, I definitely recommend looking to local community organisers rather than someone in Scotland like me! But I would suggest directly targeting decision-makers - e.g. Plaid politicians, NHS Wales management, Cardiff and Vale Health Board.

This is the most fucked up and immediately harmful policy decision I think I've ever seen in adult trans healthcare in the UK, and that's saying something. The Welsh Gender Service is one of the best in the country. It is widely praised by the patients it helps. That is why it is being targeted.

Excellent writing and reflection on 20 years of trans protest and possibility from the wonderful @notrightruth.bsky.social I hope trans pals reading it get the same sense of hope I did. If you’re a cis ally of some kind I ask you to read this section (in image with alt) if nothing else:
Some of this is about solidarity work from cis people. All that endless work of education over the past decades has not been in vain, however much the politicians and hateful people of this world would like it to be. Through incessantly speaking out and demanding change, and in joining with others to support their struggles, trans people have made allies everywhere. Teachers and lecturers, doctors and nurses, administrators, hospitality workers, lawyers, and many more are more likely to have access to information through their family or friends or trade unions, which help them in turn to support trans people in a hundred thousand little ways every day.
