It's almost like putting a quack anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist in charge of the nation's health policy has consequences. "The United States has now had more measles deaths in the past two years than we have had in the previous three decades combined...": www.ms.now/news/pennsyl...

Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak is the largest in decades in the U.S.
The state has surpassed 1,000 measles cases this year, health officials said Monday, making it the largest outbreak in the U.S. in more than three decades.

Ever since I first saw it, this scene has epitomised Amerlcan elegance for me. I wrote a short story about it for Radio 4 (never broadcast) and it's why I drink Gibsons even though nobody who works in a bar these days knows what they are. A perfect scene - RIP Eva Marie Saint.

I've done nearly 40 years on the academic staff of a UK big city Univ that often features in the 'world's top 50-100 Unis' rankings. I've never earned over £60K. The minimum salary for full Professors here is £76K. So I would say £100K pa is pretty lavish. Though clearly not for financial journos.

Kemi Badenoch has breathtaking self confidence and literally zero self awareness. Her sense of grandiosity is truley remarkable. I wonder if she’s been on some sort of weird course on developing personal self superiority. If she did - she was ripped off.

Amused by this, esp. as the author of the letter, by then a Senior Editor, interviewed me for a job at Nature in 1999. [I didn't get it.] Also reminded of how Paul Lauterbur (Nobel for MRI) always joked that Nature published his key paper 'even though they said the reviewers didn't understand it'.

Did they not Abx her & anyone else nearby, then? That does sound odd. Unless she didn't report it in case she got into trouble. That kind of thing happened in USSR days. I read a book by ex-Soviet biowar virologist Ken Alibek where he descr'd treating himself to keep an accidental exposure secret.

It's a cult. Note also that 2026 Tories ignore large chunks of the Thatchbag's views that they now find inconvenient. E.g. Thatcher saw the EU's Single Market as a major achievement. Mrs T also supported the ECHR, which Bonkers Badenoch wants to withdraw from, as guaranteeing 'individual freedoms'.

See pretty much any Trade Union. Certainly true in UCU, where the crank left SWP-and-friends lot on the 'Higher Education Committee' frequently vote for things the wider membership doesn't want. E.g. the late 2024 HEC vote rejecting the '4 fights' deal we'd spent yrs striking for. Last straw for me.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.
Lord Carlile of Berriew, Lord Anderson of Ipswich, Sir Max Hill

This is a fundamental issue with “active member” controlled organisation when the active member are a small proportion and there’s no representation of the wider membership. You *are* subject to capture. You will often go in goofy direction. Exhausting people becomes a standard tactic.
