"Due to unexpected call volume, your wait time is..." I hate it when companies blatantly lie to me like this. You cut staff because you don't care about wait times, don't pretend it's unexpected.

The tech CEOs claim that their chat bots are alive (they aren't), but definitely won't consider if they should have rights. It kind of gives away the game that they don't actually believe in rights, human or otherwise. They just want a slave class, one way or the other.

Crescent Saturn - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/2gLZGS1
Saturn never shows a crescent phase -- from Earth. But when viewed from beyond, the majestic giant planet can show an unfamiliar diminutive sliver. This image of crescent Saturn in natural color was taken by the robotic Cassini spacecraft in 2007. The featured image captures Saturn's majestic rings from the side of the ring plane opposite the Sun -- the unilluminated side -- another vista not visible from Earth. Pictured are many of Saturn's photogenic wonders, including the subtle colors of cloud bands, the complex shadows of the rings on the planet, and the shadow of the planet on the rings. A careful eye will find the moons Mimas (2 o'clock) and Janus (4 o'clock), but the real challenge is to find Pandora (8 o'clock). Saturn is now nearly opposite from the Sun in the Earth's sky and so can be seen in the evening starting just after sunset for the rest of the night.

American lives & institutions really are deeply shaped by identity-based prejudice and disadvantage, particularly regarding race and gender. People didn’t like to hear this; partly because some of the people saying so were self righteous and annoying, but mostly because it implicates us all morally.

Some academics turn up their noses at movie adaptations or popular history books, but I call them "gateway drugs" into deeper scholarship. How many of us fell in love with history because a movie (or book) sparked our curiosity first? For me, it was Amadeus - it sent me down an 18thC rabbit hole.

The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story

Holy COW. Text analysis of comments on the OMB rule: overwhelming opposition, overwhelmingly not form letters. (But 9 in 10 comments supporting the rule ARE form responses, LOL) Whatever happens next, folks have stepped up.
Screenshot text: Between May 29 and July 9, roughly 51,000 comments were posted to regulations.gov (and over 200,000 more had been received but not yet published). The verdict on public sentiment is clear and lopsided: about 94 percent oppose the proposed rule and only 6 percent support it, with fewer than one percent marked as unclear. The opposition is overwhelmingly grassroots rather than orchestrated. Form letters make up only about 16 percent of all comments (roughly 8,400 comments across 210 distinct campaigns), and only about one in eight opposing comments came from a form-letter campaign. Support for the rule, by contrast, was almost entirely organized: nearly nine in ten supportive comments (about 2,500) came from a single form-letter campaign. Opponents mostly wrote their own comments; supporters mostly signed the same form-letter.

Hey Baltimore Bluesky! I don’t think BARCS is here (please tag them if my search skills failed) but looks like they are in a dire situation with back to back intakes of a bananas number of dogs (92 animals in 2 days). Today no adoption fee and if you have the capacity to foster they are desperate!

We're also extremely short-staffed this week. Our team is doing everything possible to care for every animal while managing this sudden influx. If you visit today, we truly appreciate your patience and kindness.
We also want to be transparent about what's at stake:
BARCS is an open-admission shelter. We do not control how many animals arrive at our doors, and we cannot stop accepting animals from Animal Control who have nowhere else to go. When intake dramatically exceeds the number of animals leaving through adoption, foster, rescue, or reunification, we eventually run out of safe, humane housing.
If we cannot create enough space today, BARCS may be forced to make euthanasia decisions solely because there is no safe place left to house additional dogs. We do not want that to happen. It is the hardest reality of open-admission animal sheltering, and we work every day to prevent it.
We're incredibly hopeful that our All Paws Home event this Saturday will help many animals find homes. But we have to get there first. We need dogs leaving the shelter today, tomorrow, and Friday so they have the chance to be at Saturday's event-and so we can continue making room for the animals arriving every day.

EMERGENCY @ BARCS: This morning, BARCS is 13 dog kennels over capacity with another 12 dogs on the way after they were found living alone in a home under a search warrant. Sadly, yes, this is almost the same heartbreaking situation we experienced yesterday.
In just the past 48 hours, we've taken in 92 animals.
To make room, our team is "shifting down" dogs to double up kennels and setting up temporary crates. This is an emergency measure only.
These crates and shared kennels are not appropriate housing beyond today, and every dog needs a kennel of their own as quickly as possible.
The fastest way to help is to come to BARCS
today:
Looking to adopt? Visit us between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. It's Waived Fee Wednesday, so adoption fees are waived.
Interested in fostering? Come to BARCS between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Our team will help match you with a dog who needs a temporary place to stay.
*Please do not call or email. If you're able to help, the best thing you can do is simply come to the shelter today!
