Flu season typically starts in October or November. But it looks like the flu started to pick up in September this year.

memorial portrait sketch
2026 limited color sketch, done in an uncharacteristically more natural way than most of the artists work, as it is a small gift for a family member.

A smaller medium sized dog wearing a chest harness stands along a gravel path. woods behind her. Her body is muscular and fat with age, and her muzzle greying under her chin. She looks upward out of frame.

These are all true statements. And the only reason we don't immediately sink this detrimental shit is that somewhere along the way, someone (cough cough tech press) said these Silicon Valley guys were all geniuses and not the scam artists. That's the whole thing.

Finished The Terror: Devil in Silver. Stacked with beloved character actors like Widow's Bay, with the same brand of bleak, brutal humanism that distinguished The Terror proper. Moving without being all Mike Flanagan about it. It's on AMC+/Shudder, six 45m episodes, worth your October horror time.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a high school basketball game. The home team is down 9 points, and some players are looking discouraged on the bench. The coach points to a player just out of frame and says, “flippers, you’re in!” Panel 2: the away team attempts a deep 2-point shot, possibly to beat the buzzer, which is blocked by Flippers, a whale who doesn’t even have his arms up. Panel 3: the game ends and the home team excitedly crowd around Flippers, who won them the game. A player from the away team looks stunned, with his hands on his head.

Is this the year I make the peacock aspic inspired by Suspiria (1977) from the A24 horror cookbook? No
A blue peacock statue in a surreal red hallway. An elaborate geometric stained glass window in the background has panels of red, orange, and yellow forming a diamond pattern.

It is not immediately obvious, but the peacock statue is actually an aspic with halved hard boiled eggs embedded within. The tail is made of long thin dowels with scorpion candies at the tips. The candies are teardrop shape and slightly translucent so you can see the scorpions inside.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

i suppose i’m not surprised that it is difficult to make people care about something that is low visibility — the vast majority of people have no idea who piker is — and low salience. i think we’re also going to find, for similar reasons, that the anti-trans messaging isn’t working either.

Got scraps? Well, scoop 'em! Food Scrap Scoop! Cut the crap, scoop your scraps! The scrap scoop that can't be duped. Improve your mood and scoop your food
A green plastic scoop sitting on a blue lunch tray, a fried chicken sandwich in a brown cardboard takeout boat. The green plastic scoop says "FOOD SCRAP SCOOP". There are icons of a drumstick, burger, and apple each with one bite taken. Text continues:

"Done eating?
1. Place leftover food in the scoop.
2. Drop your scraps off at the green food-only bin.
3z return the scoop to the scoop trolley."

this administration illegally shut down federal agencies, impounded money from Congress, set up for-profit concentration camps and sent children there. They dismantled our public health infrastructure and children died of measles. Doing accountability for crimes against our Constitution is the work.
