For decades we have been saying: maybe Democrats should run ads that simply quote Republicans saying horrible things about their own constituents. But Democratic consultants convinced Democrats that that would be too effective. So, this is validating to watch. Also, always hated false civility.

Every time someone states what ought to be, people rush to the mentions to explain that it won't happen, and now I am talking to those people, and I want to be very clear: YOU are the reason it won't happen. Every time you say that you are taking energy away from "should" and reinforcing "is."

In the latest development among anti-trans wings of the Democratic Party, the Ohio Democratic Party is now deleting criticism from caucus members of Kaptur's anti-trans ad calling transgender people an "ideology." It appears any dissent over the ad is practically banned on caucus social media.

The CW idea impeachment backfires isn't true. Nor is there any value in surrendering in advance on conviction. But there's a more important long-term consideration. Looking at all this and saying nope, we're not even going to say he should be removed, is locking in a message for future presidents.

The argument in favor of voting for these candidates has been "We need to beat the fascists first, and then we can deal with anti-trans sentiment." The line from at least one such candidate is now "I worked with the fascists to beat trans people." They're not going to fight the fascists.

It can’t be the policy of the Democrats that every unpopular position is surrendered. If you’re constantly willing to alienate and de-energize a percentage of your base in exchange for an undefined handful of moderate votes, you’ll eventually find yourself with no coherent political constituency at all. The transaction doesn’t live in a vacuum: your base sees it each time, and each time their trust in you wavers a little more.

There are two fundamental problems with LLMs: 1) They possess no internal model of the world, and therefore lack any mechanism to determine truth from falsehood. Thus, they hallucinate, because a "likely" answer isn't necessarily a correct one. 2) They cannot generalize to novel scenarios

Look, the promise of AGI was the idea that if you gave an LLM enough data to train on, it would *have to* infer an internal model of the world to make accurate predictions, and therefore arrive at general intelligence. This didn't happen. We are making zero progress towards this happening.

It's not just Trump. Red state legislatures have been passing gag orders and hollowing out faculty governance. If you say you hate cancel culture, you should be pretty mad that red state politicians gave conservative students a "fire my professor" button. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/which-stor...
An Indiana University instructor was fired after a Republican Senator contacted the campus because she had used a graphic in class that a student alleged connected “Make America Great Again” to white supremacy (the instructor disagreed). She was investigated and removed under a law that claimed to expand “intellectual diversity” while also preventing students from experiencing political views unrelated to their course. The course? “Diversity, Human Rights and Social Justice” a graduate level course in the field of social work.

An English college instructor in Florida was fired after assigning an award-winning short story she had used for more than a decade featuring a fictional teacher who engages in bad behavior. A student expressed “mild discomfort.” God forbid adults going to university should experience mild discomfort.

At Texas A&M a student secretly recorded an instructor, objecting to content about gender in her class on children’s literature, then met with the President of the university to complain, and recorded those meetings, and released the recordings to friendly politicians, who then forced the firing first of the instructor, the removal of two administrators, and next the resignation of the President. The controversy led to a system-wide review of courses and fueled new restrictions on how they can teach race, gender and sexuality. Faculty cannot engage in advocacy, without any guidance as to what “advocacy” means.
