Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Proud to be a Latina in atmospheric and climate science 💃🏽

Oral Qualifying Exam July 12, 2023
Ariana Elena CastilloMe lecturing atmospheric physics/ dynamics, facing the black board as I write equations on the board with chalk as I face the board Me giving a talk at a conference. The slide is titled: “LGM vs. Current Climate
How do we know what the atmosphere was like tens of thousands of years ago? Ice cores!”

I talk about atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations during the last glacial maximum (LGM) versus current climate. They were much lower 20,000 years ago compared to present day.

There is also a figure of greenhouse gas concentrations as a function of time from ice core data.
There is also a red box with text that says: There are "very few studies on the
BDC during the last glacial maximum (LGM)." (Fu et al. 2020)Me smiling giddily in front of a tornado in a field on the side of the road in Texas

A trump supporter told me that he didn't want his tax $ going towards research into "cloud shapes". The 4/26/24 cloud shape outbreak had minimal casualties and deaths despite occurring in the Omaha metro area. This was a direct result of research, forecasting, and warnings by NOAA, NWS, and SPC

An attack on NSF is not just an attack on the staff working there; it's also an attack on academia as a whole. The aim is to starve out the universities and stop the training of new scholars. It's an attempt to rip out the system's roots and stems so it can't come back.

I should really post here more often. I enjoyed this gorgeous severe storm all to myself in eastern Colorado near Punkin Center on July 7th, 2024. These moments alone in an open field with nothing but desolate dirt roads and tumultuous skies are my absolute favorite.
