The UND Atmospheric Sciences weather map wall in the Leon F. Osborne Weather Center is nearly complete! All custom scripts. Over a year in the making. Glad that its almost done. Electronic version will be available later.

➡️ Research Group Intro #2: Thrilled to introduce my 1st PhD student, @wxkylegillett.bsky.social! Besides being a former broadcast meteorologist & the brains behind SounderPy, Kyle is a severe storms fanatic who will be diving into the environmental controls on storm merger outcomes using CM1. A result from my M.S. work: in idealized simulations of a rear-flank storm interaction, the "parent" supercell in an "interaction simulation" produced *substantially* more surface vert. vorticity than a discrete control storm, for a much larger period of time (34min!).

SounderPy Users: once my M.S. work concludes early next month & after a nice brain break, I have laundry list of updates to make to SounderPy that I plan to have completed by early full. Some new features, a couple bugs, a few dependency updates, etc. -- apologies for the delay!

Master's Thesis: defended ✅️. A long two years of grinding through this work as a TA had both its ups and downs but the work was worth it. I'm stoked to have the opportunity to continue this research here at UND for my PhD starting in the fall!

Today I gave the final lecture of the semester to my first class as instructor of record (Computer Concepts in Meteorology). My students were excellent and the subject was fun to teach. Hopefully this was the start of many more!

What's one way the RFD might be important? Inflow-outflow balance I.e., collecting pre-tornadic vert-vorticity (vortex patches) beneath the low-level meso (LLMC) such that it can be stretched into tornadic intensity. When the RFD isn't surging "forward", vortices may be... 🧵

Cute shelf cloud tonight about 6:45, and 30 minutes later, we launched a balloon through the shallowest little cold pool. About 100, maybe 150 meters, of "cold" air.

I think we finally had a legit (warm) cu field over northeastern North Dakota this afternoon, for the first time this year. We are so back.

Dimensions are a hard concept to grasp for beginner programmers. I'm hoping this ridiculous example using a saltine cracker helps solve this problem when I show it lecture this afternoon lol

Coming to an Iowa Severe Storms and Doppler Radar Conference near you this Saturday.... Storm interactions impact storm behavior and we may be beginning to unravel why. I'll share some preliminary findings from my Master's work at UND that investigates this relationship!

Stoked to present my master's thesis work to the public for the first time today at UND's Graduate Research Achievement Day. TLDR: storm interactions are important, and we may be starting to understand why. Those going to the Iowa Severe Storms Conference will get to hear more!

We launched our first yesterday, and three more today - for practice and to make sure we can get our data into the global communications networks for forecasters to be able to use **worldwide.** For the weather nerds: data from our "third-ever" launch (18Z today) below. Very cold atmosphere today!

@nws.noaa.gov Director Ken Graham presented on NOAA’s modeling grand challenge at #AMS2026 this morning. He announced that the NWS is moving to MPAS as its modeling dynamical core, with his #1 moonshot goal being a global, fully coupled 3-km Earth prediction system using MPAS.

That's a wrap for me at #AMS2026 -- here's the work we presented last night at the student poster session: Can we increase predictability of TC-tor events *prior* to landfall via airborne observations? Here's the poster. It was a pleasure to see everyone! Keep in touch!

Biggest take away from #AMS2026 so far: everything happens for a reason. The opportunities, hardships, relationships, etc. Its all for a reason, and that reason is growth.

Beyond severe convective weather today, severe fire weather will exist on the high-plains of New Mexico & west Texas tomorrow PM. Extreme fire-behavior is possible given such extremely dry low-levels and strong surface winds. #NMwx #TXwx

I love reading replies on wx folk's posts about these NOAA/NWS cuts that say something like "our government is bloated, overstaffed, paid too much, not needed, we **need** to cut them" etc. I'm quite sure most of these people could've cared less until a certain someone *told* them its a "problem"
