Ultramarine Glacier, Alaska has had no accumulation zone in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2026. The lack of a persistent accumulation zone indicates a glacier that cannot survive. The glacier has retreated 2.2 km since 1986. glacierchange.blog/2026/09/26/u...

Berg Lake, Alaska is dammed by Steller Glacier. This large lake 13 km2 drained in late August of 2026 as noted in a series of Landsat images. This drainage was later in the melt season than in 2023, 2024, or 2025. glacierchange.blog/2026/09/03/b...

Worked on this project with NASA Earth Observatory examining movement of largest iceberg that calved in Northern Hemisphere in 2026. As of Aug. 31 it has moved 110 km from its origin, across and south into Kennedy Channel. #glaciology science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-...

Glaciar Mayo, in Parque Nacionales Los Glaciares, Argentina, terminus has been pinned on north shore of an arm of Lago Argentino for 40 years. In the last 6 months the terminus has experienced its largest change, 1 km2 of area calving into a Melange (M) & icebergs (I) - Landsat and Sentinel images.

HPS-12 an outlet glacier drains west from the Southern Patagonia Icefield. In a 2017 NASA Earth Observatory project I reported the 13 km retreat 1985-2017 as the fastest in Chile. HPS-12 has now retreated 14.75 km 1985 to 2025, over 50% of its length. #glaciology glacierchange.blog/2025/12/26/h...

1/3-The International Year for Glaciers’ Preservation is 2025. Annual mass balance observations of alpine glaciers are reported to the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) by national reps with a Dec. 1 deadline each year, providing an excellent measure of how they did. Here are four examples.

Glaciers are supposed to maintain ~50% snow cover to the end of the summer. Many Rocky Mt. glaciers in Alberta lost all snow cover in 2025 leading to rapid thinning, fragmentation and rock outcrops emerging amidst the glacier. This is not a formula for survival. glacierchange.blog/2025/12/07/s...

On Heard Island, Stephenson Lagoon began forming after 1980 due to Stephenson Glacier retreat, it was largely ice filled until 2010. Yesterday area was 10 sqkm. This opened new king penguin coloniy areas, monitored by the Australian Antarctic Program. glacierchange.blog/2019/02/04/h... #glaciology

We measured the mass balance annually on three glaciers on Mount Baker, North Cascades of Washington. This year Easton, Rainbow and Sholes Glacier lost more than 2 m w.e. Here is a Sentinel time lapse of snowpack evolution on the the mountain and glaciers. Measured 1.7 m ablation in August.

Steffen Glacier, Northern Patagonia Icefield has retreated 3.75 km from Oct. 2023 (black arrow) to Oct. 2025 (yellow arrow). This produced many new icebergs including iceberg X. Laguan de Los Tempanos (T) has also partially drained. More details at: glacierchange.blog/2024/04/21/s...

Fidtjovbreen and Gonfjordbreen, two adjacent glaciers in Svalbard lost all snow cover in 2024 and 2025. You can walk 15 km from terminus upglacier to the divide and down the other glacier to the terminus without touching any snow, which sustains glaciers. @drheidisevestre.bsky.social #glaciology

Stonebreen an ice cap on Edgeoya, Svalbard in recent years has lost nearly all snow/firn cover, retaining no accumulation. This has led to retreat from 2020-2025, indicated on the false color Sentinel images. The bare ice surface is darker and can no longer retain any meltwater. #glaciology

Let’s start with the effect of climate on ice sheets. Ice sheets are driven by climate but the Antarctic ice sheet is cold and there is little surface melt. Most of what we see in Antarctica relates to the oceans eroding floating ice shelves from beneath. 2/

The retreat of Alsek Glacier, Alaska has in 2025 generated a new island-Prow Knob in Alsek Lake-that has an area of 5 km2. In 1984 the knob was nearly encircled by the glacier. As these Landsat images reveal the loss ofconnection between the glacier and the knob at the end of July/early Aug. 2025.
