A woman has just died of plague in Russia, allegedly after breaking a test tube in a lab. This article doesn’t specify, but others have said that it is pneumonic plague, which can spread between humans via droplet transmission. 200 people with whom she had contact are now under medical observation.

A friend has Covid right now. They have lost their sense of smell and they're having cognitive problems. This hit me today, as it often does: we made, and continue to make, a huge collective mistake in allowing a virus that impacts the brain to transmit unmitigated globally.

Me too. In the past week, I've heard some wild and really concerning takes on here: that Long COVID is psychosomatic, and even that its symptoms can simply be chalked up to autism. I say this as someone who is neurodivergent: they are not the same thing

The spread of PJ.2.1 in Spain 🇪🇸 raises an obvious question: What about the rest of Europe? The answer: We largely don’t know. Of 886 SARS-CoV-2 sequences collected in Europe since July 1 and submitted to GISAID, 671 are from Spain. Much of the rest of Europe has gone dark on genomic surveillance.

These include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawai'i, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia. Levels on the Big Island of Hawai’i are particularly high. Note also, the NYC area is seeing outbreaks.

There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary statistic of 40 only includes counties with observed data, rather than estimated data. For example, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, and Tennessee likely have outbreaks, but monitoring is poor.
