This is a helpful thread prompted by a recent paper which, among other things, retired the very high emissions scenario for the next CMIP. Climate scientists have known this was coming for a while, but Trump used it as a reason to blast us all as idiotic alarmists. 1/2

I love this interview so much. Basically - the nerds are angry and we're not going away. Also mentoring early career researchers is extra difficult now, & especially if they are in the US on a visa. There is so much added stress for international researchers. grist.org/science/kate...

I recently submitted my 1st first-author paper since 2020. Why the long gap? We had our 2nd child in Aug 2020. In 2023 we moved to another country. In 2024 my son was diagnosed w/ Autism and ADHD. Scientists & academics are people first, & everyone's career looks different.

What does climate change look like? Hiking through Table Rock Mountain State Park, SC. It experienced record-breaking rainfall during Hurricane Helene in 2024, extensive damage to the forest, and a wildfire in spring 2025, thanks to downed trees and a dry winter/spring (and a careless smoker).

There are tens of thousands of scientists working in the US whose funding or careers have been damaged, and dozens of them moving to other countires is...not that many. "Just move to somewhere else and do science" is not a serious approach here. There aren't anywhere near enough jobs elsewhere.

This is disturbing on many levels, and costs at least $584 million just for the purchase. The conditions in existing DHS facilities are inhumane. Meanwhile science budgets have been slashed in this country, leaving us all more vulnerable to climate change and disease.

It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

My favorite dataset. For 65 years, it has recorded the seasonal breathing of the Earth due to photosynthesis & respiration, the steady rise of CO2 from burning fossil fuels, and year-to-year changes from factors like El Nino. Losing it & other atmospheric monitoring would handicap future discovery.
