I voted today. How are Americans feeling about the status quo? Well, this was the longest I've ever waited to vote (40 minutes).

Pleased to see this is the quote that was pulled out of my interview with UGA's Office of Research. Addressing climate change is an 'all hands on deck' kind of situation. Let's go. research.uga.edu/news/harper-...

Happy #EarthDay from the second lead author meeting for the #IPCC WGI report in Santiago, Chile. As we are discussing all the many impacts of climate change, it's good to pause and remember what a beautiful planet we have and the responsibility to be good stewards of our shared home.

What does climate change look like? Hiking through Table Rock Mountain State Park, SC. It experienced record-breaking rainfall during Hurricane Helene in 2024, extensive damage to the forest, and a wildfire in spring 2025, thanks to downed trees and a dry winter/spring (and a careless smoker).

Great start to the IPCC lead author meeting! ✔️ Inclusivity was set as a priority for this assessment cycle, we even had a full session on it 🎆 All 3 working groups are together the whole week, it's an exciting opportunity to talk outside discipline boundaries ⏳We have a lot of work to do! Let's go

Hello fellow IPCC author and runner, I just got back from a very similar looking run! It's a nice evening. Good way to start a busy week!

Yesterday I was enjoying quiet coastal Georgia with my family, and today I am headed to Paris for the first author meeting for the next #IPCC report. Sadly, the ecosystems we enjoyed, & my inlaws neighborhood, are at risk from rising sea levels if climate change continues unabated.

Challenge: post your latest photo taken in DC to show what a hell-hole it is: I went for a run on my own at 6:15am and felt perfectly safe the whole time.

Congrats to these fabulous students on presenting their research projects at UGA's undergraduate research symposium today! I presented at this symposium in 2002(!), and it was a pivotal time of discovering how much I love research. I'm thrilled to be able to offer similar opportunities now.

Good showing in Atlanta today for #standupforscience, where many people work in health sciences or with the CDC. I feel inspired by the creative signs and speakers.
A crowd of protesters with signs supporting science stand in a grassy plaza.Protesters with signs: "Make America smart again", "public funding+ inclusive science= better world", "you made the nerds angry!", and "save NOAA from dismantling"

I'm taking part in @standupforscience.bsky.social in Atlanta on Friday! The landscape for US scientists has forever changed in just 6 wks. I hope this event highlights how many people are affected by Trump's destructive actions. If nothing else, I'll be enjoying these cookies with my friends.

Let's all take care of ourselves this weekend. It has not been an easy week to be a climate scientist, or just a human who is paying attention to what's going down. But burning ourselves out in week 1 will get us nowhere. Here's a cute cat photo, just because.

Greetings! 👋🏼 I'm a climate scientist studying the role of vegetation & soils in our future climate. I'm also a geography professor at UGA & a UGA alum (go Dawgs!). I work with Earth system models (lots of desk time), so I get outside to enjoy nature and exercise as much as I can. We only have one 🌍
I love trees. This one's a beaut. It's an 800 year old sweet chestnut in Wales.

If you feel like the problems of the world are too big to solve, I highly recommend litter picking! In a little over an hour, my daughter and I made the area around the local elementary school look loads better, and kept a bunch of plastic out of the soil. It felt really good. #ActLocal

Super fun time today at Hyytiälä research station, where they have been collecting continuous measurements of the first for nearly 30 years! The forest is an estimated sink of 300 gC/m2/yr, and the sink is growing each year.
