Happy to share this statement from the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, which responds to recent comments about my position as Senior Lecturer in Eighteenth Century Studies and work I supervise. Solidarity with all marginalised academics under attack by the peddlers of a culture war.
Statement from BSECS
Published on: 18th Aug 2026
BACK
The British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies supports the work of scholars of the period from all backgrounds and career stages, working in all disciplines. The Society has recently reaffirmed its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in all its activities, and its opposition to bullying and harassment.
As such, members of the Society have been deeply concerned about the public hounding of academics by sections of the media and on social media platforms.
In the current 'culture wars', universities and their staff
- and Black scholars in particular - have been targeted to score political points about EDI, 'woke' culture and progressive causes. This tragically came to a head last week with the death of Prof Jason Arday, who had been subjected to weeks of hostile commentary and personal attacks.A recent article in The Spectator typified this trend. In this article, one of our own colleagues and his doctoral students were attacked for their work on queer readings of fiction. We stand in solidarity with our colleague, and strongly object to any such attempt to bully scholars and students in our field.
Furthermore, we insist that the study of sexuality is a legitimate and urgent academic endeavour, not least because many of today's attitudes towards sex and gender have their roots in the eighteenth century.
Indeed, current scholarship on the eighteenth century is very much alive to the challenges faced by society today, in fields such as race, gender, class and the environment, among many others. The British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies will continue to support those who carry out this important work, and we wish to assure our members that the Society will stand up to any attempt to harass them.

It (nearly) lives! Forthcoming from OUP in November or December! My first reaction, for once, was glee — though the terror of writing a book is that it’s never finished. Eek! Woohoo! Wild to have proofs in hand!!!!
Title page of forthcoming book by me, titled Nineteenth-Century Poetry and Cosmologies of the Human: Worlds Unmanned. From Oxford UP.Table of contents for forthcoming book.

Introduction: Poetry, Person, Planet — with subsections on William Wordsworth; Sylvia Wynter and lyricization; climate, affectability, impress; and criticism, canonicity, and counterbumanism.

First chapter on Wordsworth, Charles Lyell, and c19 manscapes — with subsections on Wordsworth’s and Lyell’s lyric theologies, the pathetic fallacy (Ruskin) and Wynter on desperate realization, and apostrophizing Toussaint Louverture.

Second chapter on Tennyson’s In Memoriam, the possibilities and limits of posthumanism, and ambivalent reading — with subsections on extinction and apostrophe.

Third chapter on Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the problem of reference, and infrastructures of reading — with subsections on Swedenborgianism, sphericity, plantation inheritances, and the slippages of rhyme.

Fourth chapter on Phillis Wheatley, extractivism, extractionist reading, and salvage criticism—with subsections on solar intergumanism, allusion, reticence, and refusal.

Coda on contemporary representations of climate collapse, Wynter on transumption, and the afterlives of c19 aesthetic imaginaries.

Hey, guys, when the librarians get pissed about the destruction of books, it’s time to put those listening ears on. Because we are very comfortable with the idea that books are tools that can be retired. What’s happening right now is not that.

And we're live with the CFP for next year's Hollywood Conference. lmk if you have questions; hope to see you at USC! www.thehollywoodconference.com
CALL FOR PAPERS:
The Hollywood Conference II
@ USC’s School of Cinematic Arts
The second biennial Hollywood Conference will be held July 21-24, 2027 at University of Southern California’s
School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles, California with a goal of bringing together scholars, archivists,
historians, and practitioners interested in the study of Hollywood—past and present—aesthetically, historically,
globally, culturally, economically, technologically, and ideologically.
As with the first meeting in 2025, the organizing committee welcomes individual papers, pre-constituted
panels, and roundtable discussion proposals broadly related to the study of Hollywood and its products.
Additionally, as we recognize the centennial of the introduction of synchronized sound in Hollywood cinema,
we particularly encourage papers, panels, and roundtables about Hollywood’s relationship to sound and
music. Events at the conference will highlight both this centenary and the roughly 50th anniversary of modern
sound technologies. The organizers seek panels and papers on topics such as the coming of sound, sound
technologies, musicals, scoring, musicians, sound mixing, soundscapes, sound montage, etc.
Submission Guidelines:
• The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM (US Pacific Daylight Time) on January 22th, 2027.
• Announcements of acceptances will be sent by mid-March, 2027.
• Submit proposals HERE.
Proposal Guidelines:
Participants may submit: one paper (individual) or be part of a pre-constituted panel or a roundtable. Papers
are expected to be presented in 15-minutes.
• Individual Papers: Individuals submitting paper proposals should provide a title, an abstract of 250
words, and contact information. Co-authored papers are acceptable. Papers are expected to be
presented in 15 minutes.
• Panels: Panel coordinators should submit a title and a 250-word abstract for the pre-constituted panel
as a whole, as well as a title, a 250-word abstract, and contact information for each panel …
