This is a useful thread. I want to examine "AI tools are power". The UN Scientific Panel report used this framing to promote the concept of a "digital divide", but that presumes that the power is neutral. I argue that it is fundamentally asymmetric, more a tool of empire, oligarchy, and scammers.

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

During my entire career as a Twain scholar I have grown especially sensitive to the desire to appropriate the cultural capital of cultural figures & convert it into propaganda for plutocracy. To be able force great minds to endorse the status quo has always been the fantasy of soft power.

From Serena Jampel, one of the writing tutors I worked with at Harvard on the difference between the human tutor and AI and how a writing tutor can help a student find their voice. Lots of wisdom and also this truth: "the more you use it, the more you use it" www.harvardmagazine.com/commentary/h...
And that was another remarkable feature of the Writing Center. Sometimes students would resist my feedback, insisting that their structure would make sense once they added a bit more reasoning. In doing so, they were often pushed to articulate their thinking more clearly, and to affirm their confidence in their position.

An LLM cannot do that, because it does not have its own opinions or thoughts. It is only trained to engage the user: the more you use it, the more you use it. That’s actually the antithesis of writing instruction, which aims to cultivate independent thought.

This! 👇🏽 AI evangelists pretend that the debate over the nature of AI—namely whether it’s sentient or not, is a referendum on whether it’s dangerous. But that has no relationship to reality. AI can be, AND IS, harmful regardless of whether it’s conscious or merely a creature of its training data.
