When Twitter was good, I remember this great thread on how people hinted that it was time for their guests to leave. I learned so much about regional and generational practices. Bluesky is fine, but it'll never be good like Twitter was good. Idk what the special sauce is exactly.

There has not been a single instance of an AI phone assistant that has not resulted in me hanging up, completely frustrated, not a single thing solved I'm looking at you CVS, the store with the worst website and the worst phone service. I don't want to download your app to schedule a flu shot!!!

You cannot watch any Ryan Murphy vehicle sober. I'm watching the Lizzie Borden installment and it is unhinged. For ex: a parody of Scrooge on xmas except it's for a bedding ritual 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

I don't listen to live radio, but I could not avoid Shaboozy's "A Bar Song" or Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" or Beyonce's "Texas Hold 'Em" or Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" when I was out in gen pop (stores, cars, etc). I have not heard "Choosin' Texas" at all. Not a flex, just a fact!

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

An extreme example, but Nazi gas chambers were designed & engineered by the German firm Tofp and Sohne. They also designed the high-capacity ventilation & exhaust systems at Auschwitz-Birkenau. This engineering company 1st made heating & brewing equipment, then military weapons for both world wars.

It's week 4 and my no-reminder experiment seems to be working -- most students learned very quickly not to rely on me to send reminders for assignments and have been on top of their own work! Incredible! Feels like 2007

I read this very short piece and there is no practical suggestions, except for Perusall (which we don't consider an LLM?). Asking ChatGPT to brainstorm for a student, then guiding the student to choose the best idea is ridiculous and a waste of time. I haven't read a SINGLE thing that persuades me

For the 1st Intro to Lit Study class, I asked students to interpret the meaning of Raymond Carver's "Popular Mechanics." After they wrote that down, I asked them to think about how their personal experience influenced their interpretation. I was NOT prepared to hear students loudly say, "oh shit"

This whole thing is wild and messy, but what the hell is this visa for "extraordinary ability" www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/u...
Screenshot from the New York Times article: "Mr. Yiannopoulos is a British citizen who has lived in the United States since 2015, when he entered the country to join the staff of Breitbart News using a nonimmigrant visa reserved for people with “extraordinary ability.” He did not respond to messages seeking comment."

ICE has fallen out of the headlines but July marked the largest number of migrant detentions ever on record. Five migrants have died in ICE custody in the last two months. It's also currently impossible to legally migrate to this country, as 100% of visa applications have been paused.

You absolutely do not have to read this slop, but the irony is not lost that this person who blames the institution for Arday's death does NOT count institutional racism in his assessment of "colorblind" policies in academia Fuck all the way off, forever
"I didn’t quote Harvard’s statistic to celebrate it, or because I believe that black people don’t belong at universities. There are many brilliant black scholars. But it’s a difficult fact to face that in a truly colorblind system that didn’t take race into account, there would be a shocking lack of diversity in certain institutions. As I said in the controversial essay that mentions the Harvard statistic, “when it comes to policymaking in a multiracial society, we might need to make sure that everyone feels they have a voice in determining our collective fate.” To this end, I argued for taking measures to ensure meaningful representation of major demographic groups. But we shouldn’t do this under the banner of DEI, which automatically blames differences in outcome on white racism."

Happy to share this statement from the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, which responds to recent comments about my position as Senior Lecturer in Eighteenth Century Studies and work I supervise. Solidarity with all marginalised academics under attack by the peddlers of a culture war.
Statement from BSECS
Published on: 18th Aug 2026
BACK
The British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies supports the work of scholars of the period from all backgrounds and career stages, working in all disciplines. The Society has recently reaffirmed its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in all its activities, and its opposition to bullying and harassment.
As such, members of the Society have been deeply concerned about the public hounding of academics by sections of the media and on social media platforms.
In the current 'culture wars', universities and their staff
- and Black scholars in particular - have been targeted to score political points about EDI, 'woke' culture and progressive causes. This tragically came to a head last week with the death of Prof Jason Arday, who had been subjected to weeks of hostile commentary and personal attacks.A recent article in The Spectator typified this trend. In this article, one of our own colleagues and his doctoral students were attacked for their work on queer readings of fiction. We stand in solidarity with our colleague, and strongly object to any such attempt to bully scholars and students in our field.
Furthermore, we insist that the study of sexuality is a legitimate and urgent academic endeavour, not least because many of today's attitudes towards sex and gender have their roots in the eighteenth century.
Indeed, current scholarship on the eighteenth century is very much alive to the challenges faced by society today, in fields such as race, gender, class and the environment, among many others. The British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies will continue to support those who carry out this important work, and we wish to assure our members that the Society will stand up to any attempt to harass them.
The Executive Committee of BSECS
