Standing up for, protecting, and supporting your staff and the integrity of your institution - that's real leadership. A model for us all. Thank you, Lonnie Bunch.

Screenshot of two paragraphs of the article on Lonnie Bunch's departure from the Smithsonian:
"
Mr. Bunch said it had been difficult to have his colleagues attacked by the administration. 'I have always tried to protect people,' he said. "So I’ve always said, ‘Let most of the weight fall on me. They don’t deserve it.’ We’re in a time when people are being hurt.”

His priority has been 'How do I always make sure that we put the Smithsonian in the strongest position?' Mr. Bunch said. 'That we articulate what we believe in, the importance of nonpartisanship and scholarship?'"

It's completely jarring to see the composition of the National Endowment for the Humanities' National Council on the Humanities after almost all members were fired last year. #NEH (also this wikipedia page needs some serious updating) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...

A year ago today, the National Endowment for the Humanities announced the reorganization of its offices - months after firing 70% of its staff through a Reduction in Force (RIF). Little-known fact: a RIF should only take place *after* a reorg - not before. #NEH fired us without any concrete cause.

The trigger for the suit was the abrupt withdrawal of a $250,000 Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, to help support the building of the Underground Railroad Education Center. The loss of NEH funding led to the collapse of other grants, a loss totalling $8 million.

For those looking at their NEH grant reinstatement, highly recommend looking at the Award Reinstatement Instructions, which are much more specific about what is/isn't a change of scope, what budget changes need approval (nothing w/in 25% of total award), & what staffing needs approval.
