Oxfordshire’s first new Quiet Lane has come into effect. Shepherds Pit Lane, to the village of Stanton St John, now has a closed gate at one end to prevent through motor traffic, making the road safer for walkers and cyclists. The parallel Bayswater Road remains open to cars and is no slower.

“These are the domestic weaknesses that helped to make the country susceptible to becoming a concentration camp regime.” degenerateart.beehiiv.com/p/into-the-a...
In the U.S., we currently have the existing brutality of the carceral system, cultural acceptance of disparate treatment for people of color, forced Native American exile to reservations, the long echoes Japanese American internment during World War Il, the continuing operation of places like Guantanamo, and the willingness of both major political parties to use a detention-based punitive approach to immigration. These are the domestic weaknesses that helped to make the country susceptible to becoming a concentration camp regime.

This is one of three major Federal actions against healthcare for trans people this week. While the two bills passed by the House are not expected to pass the Senate, all three of these actions are heartbreaking to see. Both House bills would have failed if the Democratic caucus had held together.

6 years ago, a federal ban on gender-affirming care for young people was absent from the national Dem agenda, seemed unlikely to almost everyone who isn’t trans. 6 years ago, Marjorie Taylor Greene was a QAnon crank with a crossfit gym. Yesterday her ban passed out of the House with three Dem votes.

I hit my limit so I wrote a call to arms. It's called We Are The Internet. I hope you will read it and share it. Thanks. www.leahreich.com/we-are-the-i...
I see a lot of contradictions and small hypocrisies in both how tech is built and in how we, you and me and all the other individuals out there, engage with this tech. We say we hate algorithms but then we get overwhelmed by all the content or angry that the new space we want to inhabit is empty, isn't filling up with content (inventory!) like the old place did. We say we hate social media but then we demand the new platforms behave like the old ones. We say we don't like how much tech has taken away from us but then we don't want to do the work required of us to help build spaces together, to create a healthier culture, to engage with each other in more human ways. We talk about how angry and horrible the Internet has become but when was the last time you were kind to a stranger online?
Yesterday on Bluesky, I posted a photo of my cat, and it was very popular. A lot of people responded to it, enough that I could not bring myself to respond to each one. But I tried to reply to some, and when I did, one person said "Thank you for responding." I sat with that all night. Thank you for responding. Thank you for acknowledging me, acknowledging that I exist and that I matter. Thank you for extending one small bit of kindness.
