Okay so I've built a new Atlas, this time it lets you explore the conversations on Bluesky over the past 7 days graphically. It should update every ~6 hours and help you navigate the information environment that exists on here. I've learned a LOT about what people do here today... atlas.jazco.dev

New blog post: "Cluster analysis: A skeptic’s guide". In which I ask a few questions that social scientists wishing to identify hidden classes in their data ought to address. janhove.github.io/posts/2026-0...
A two-dimensional scatterplot showing a three-cluster solution.

Caption: "Figure 2: A visualisation of a Latent Profile Analysis fit. Such visualisations may help readers appreciate that the clusters aren’t nicely separated and that the researchers’ notion of clusters may not correspond to their own."Table of contents:

Refresher: What is cluster analysis?
What are the clusters for?
What clusters, exactly?
Does the pipeline work?
What does the solution look like?
When running follow-up analyses, how is the uncertainty in the cluster assignments taken into account?
Was it worth it?

🔭 Astrophysicist Dr. Andrea Dupree: + Led the team that used the Hubble to capture the first image of a star's surface + Discovered fast, hot winds emitting from young stars (advanced understanding of early planetary environments) + Contributed to the ongoing search of exoplanets #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A close-up photograph of internationally recognized astrophysicist Dr. Andrea Kundsin Dupree (born September 17, 1939) smiling directly at the camera. Dr. Dupree is celebrated for major scientific breakthroughs, including leading the team that captured the first direct image of another star's surface (Betelgeuse) using the Hubble Space Telescope, discovering fast, hot stellar winds, and serving as the first female Associate Director at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. In the photograph, she is shown from the chest up, leaning slightly toward the right. Her joyful expression features a wide, open-mouthed smile, crinkling around her blue eyes, and vibrant short blonde hair parted to the side. She wears a solid black V-neck t-shirt accessorized with large silver hoop earrings and a prominent, colorful statement necklace composed of oversized, smooth, rounded beads in alternating shades of red, green, purple, orange, pink, and translucent blue. The background is a softly blurred outdoor setting, bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon or sunset. It reveals dry, grassy terrain with low shrubs and sparse trees under an open sky, creating a relaxed and cheerful mood.

I also wouldn’t recommend relying soley on DOAJ or OpenAlex (which pulls from DOAJ) to correctly identity OA type. Many diamond OA journals aren’t indexed in DOAJ and so these journals are often incorrectly labelled as closed or hybrid in Open Alex.

Dr. Paula Hammond is Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT. She creates super-thin nanoparticles (1,000X smaller than the width of a human hair) by stacking layers of materials--layers that can be programmed to deliver cancer drugs & much more. She was born #OTD in 1963. #WomenInSTEM (1/2) 🧵
A vibrant, professional color portrait of Paula T. Hammond, the distinguished American chemical engineer, materials scientist, and MIT Institute Professor, captured in 2023. She sits with arms crossed in a relaxed yet confident pose against a warm, softly lit dark background, exuding warmth, intelligence, and quiet authority. Dr. Hammond, a Black woman with short, neatly styled dark hair and wears elegant maroon cat-eye glasses that frame her bright, engaging eyes and welcoming smile. She is dressed in a rich orange halter-neck blouse with a draped bow at the neckline, complemented by gold jewelry: a large bracelet on one wrist, a delicate watch on the other, and a prominent ring on her right hand. The warm lighting highlights her radiant expression and the subtle texture of her outfit, conveying a sense of approachability and deep expertise. The image captures her as a trailblazing leader in nanoscale materials engineering—pioneering layer-by-layer assembly for targeted drug delivery in cancer treatment, tissue regeneration, and advanced energy storage—while serving as Dean of MIT's School of Engineering and recipient of the 2025 National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The portrait radiates inspiration, resilience, and the joy of scientific discovery.

binary data was not supposed to have decimal parts!
Years of compiler development, yet no real-world use found for anything other than char and int!
Wanted to use decimal numbers anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: it was called FIXED-POINT ARITHMETIC
"x==x can be FALSE!", "1/0 is a number", "the sum of 1/10 and 2/10 is 0.30000004 - statements dreamt up by the utterly deranged

LOOK at what floating point numbers have demanding your respect for all this time, with all the circutis and data types with built for them

"Hello, I want to knof if f is a real number and less than -1 please?" "Sure that'll be f!=f?0:-1/0.f==f||f==-1.f/0?0:-1f>f"

Computer scientist Margaret Hamilton coined the term “software engineer.” She directed the Software Engineering Division at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab & led development of the on-board flight software for NASA’s Apollo Guidance Computer. She was born #OTD in 1936 & turns 90 today! #WomenInSTEM
Two side-by-side black-and-white photographs of pioneering computer scientist Margaret Hamilton (born August 17, 1936). The left panel features a mature, close-up portrait where Hamilton gazes directly at the viewer with a serene, confident, and reflective expression, framed by her long, dark, slightly silvering hair. The right panel is a famous archival photograph showing a younger Hamilton standing indoors next to a towering stack of bound paper binders containing the Apollo Guidance Computer source code, which she led the development of at MIT. She is smiling broadly and wears a striped, long-sleeved mini dress with dark Mary Jane shoes and glasses, resting her hand proudly on top of the massive column of printed code. The overall composition contrasts her youthful triumph with her enduring legacy, capturing an optimistic, intellectually rigorous mood that highlights her monumental contributions to space exploration.
