The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few isn't just bad for our economy. It's corrosive to our democracy. When the wealthy and well-connected control our political system, regular people don't have a voice. The result? The demagoguery and corruption we're seeing now.

Wading into the "relative versus absolute" El Niño intensity debate: I genuinely think both are important--and I think we lose important information if we focus solely on one vs another. And both, as of late Sep, have now reached or exceeded record levels! [Thread]
Plot by Daniel Swain showing temporal evolution of ONI vs RONI index during 2026, representing two different ways to visualize El Nino intensity. The ONI has been at record levels since May, and the RONI has been at near-record levels since June. Data directly from NOAA.

Same in Australia. Chinese or Russian foreign interference is seen as a national security threat, and ASIO takes action against it. But Israeli foreign interference is "lobbying". The PM gives the chief lobbyist a job and staff, and the ASIO boss invites the Israeli president to a private briefing.

As has been extensively argued, public sector pay rates tend to determine economy-wide rates. That Australian rates of pay have fallen far behind profit growth, even behind weak productivity growth, and now behind inflation, is very much because of the games played by operations like the RBA.

Australia is at a tipping point. Choosing the brave route – taxing gas and raising revenue – would also, in this case, be the right one.

Things: 1. NOAA RONI appears similar to the Australian BOM's rNiño3.4 — anomaly vs a fixed baseline (1991-2020), relative to the all-tropical-oceans SST, with a fudge to preserve the prior stats. 2. But NOAA *ONI* is not like trad Niño3.4. ONI uses a centred 30-year baseline adjusted every 5 years.

Petrol price surge sees inflation hit 4%, but yesterday’s rate rise won’t help
Inflation in August rose from 3.5% to 4.0%, which might make you think the RBA had a point in raising interest rates yesterday. The problem is that all of the increase was due to petrol prices.
